1998 Mustang GT... good/bad?

In my never ending search for a cheap fun car...
The guy next door slapped a for sale sign on his bright YELLOW 1998 Mustang GT.
Body looks clean and straight, have not called to get the specifics... trying to talk myself out of it. He is asking $3700 firm.

I know you are the wrong guys to ask to talk me out of it... and yet... here we are.

Depends on the details. If the car has no major issues you should be good at that price and be able to drive if for a year or more and still get that amount out of it later. Hope it's a 5-speed. Good luck and have fun.

The good would be that it's cheaper than a used pair of collector tennis shoes. The bad would be that you are driving a 1998 Mustang in yellow, I guess.

It has Cobra wheels (silver, very nice looking) but only GT badgeing, I presume if it was a Cobra he be advertising that. It does have a 5 speed.

These are not the wheels but they look something like this:

Good clean fun for peanuts, and easy to maintain, although I have never been a fan of yellow. I have had an 1985 GT, a 1995 GT, and now a 2004 GT. I plan on getting a 2011+ coyote motor GT for my next DD.

Basic info here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Mustang_(fourth_generation)

The 4.6 modular V-8 is proving out well as far as long life goes.

A huge aftermarket full of goodies. Cheap to buy, cheap to run.

On the minus side..pretty small cockpit. A friend had a'99 Cobra Mustang. I couldn't get the seat back far enough to be comfortable.

It's a 20 year old car...proceed carefully.

Oh, and you'll need a thick hide to be able to ignore the elitists here...

Yup. If it's clean and well maintained it sounds like a no-brainer. A fun car for dirt cheap, what's not to love?

If you can somehow avoid the allure of posting daily about how Mustangs are incredible while all Porsche drivers are elitist snobs, you'll be fine.

Pffft! I have owned a 944 and a Miata!

And yeah, yellow would not be my first choice... but not necessarily a deal breaker for me.

I loved yellow cars as a kid. Today, I think a well-done 'muted' yellow car from the 60's is great but almost all Ferrari Fly Yellow cars make me think "trying too hard". YMMV.

I had a '96 in college and it was a great car. With full length subframe connectors, and mild suspension upgrades it handled really well. A lot of fun to drive.

And at that price, you could throw it away when you were done with it and lose less than the depreciation on a new one.

But how would it do against a well setup 944?

Its not going to be very fast, but it will certainly make a nice sound if it has an exhaust. For a few bucks more, you could get into a 'new edge' 99-04 GT with more HP. 225hp vs 260hp. I had a 2002 GT. It was more fun than I expected, and led to me buying my current Mach 1.

Forget a few bucks more. Just browsing craigslist. There are quite a few next gen mustangs in LA at the same price point.
