You have made the investment by keeping it, so why not reap the reward what ever it may be?

Ebay is your friend...

I think the Stegman's are worth some dough, but I'm hanging onto those because I like looking at them...I think the rest of it is pretty much just sentimental for someone. Who else remembers the Hector Luis Bergandi paintings depicting 1980's Formula One life, on the last page of R&T? And frankly, most of it is just the giveaways from the track. (The MOMO poster is signed by Derek Bell!)

Nice collection there, Mike! Love that Detroit GP II poster!

You can usually find a buyer for everything but you need to weigh it against the value of your time spent identifying, photo-ing, listing, packing and shipping it to someone. And then maybe getting stiffed or dealing with someone returning it for absurd reasons and starting all over again.

If your 'market clearing price' (as Hugh says) is $75 an hour you might think twice about spending an hour to ship a poster to some guy in Mississippi to make $15.

I'm with you brother. I hate to just chuck it, though. I've texted the local Speed Museum here, waiting for a reply to see if they want any of this. If they don't I'll dispose of it, maybe in a creative way, and kick myself when one of the pieces shows up at Sotheby's further on down the road.

Gotta research wall paste and Banksy...

The way to address this is to sell in bulk.

Ten posters for a bulk price of $200.00.

Ship rolled up together in one tube makes it easy.
-------

Do the same with books, magazines, clothing....anything really.

Put together a grouping - and whatever makes sense to ship all in one package.
---------

On eBay your strategy is to use a starting bid that is the minimum you would take along with a BIN that is fair but gives you what the items are really worth at market price.

No reserve - keep it simple.

On items that are not easily shipped.....advertise in the local (regional) PCA (or 356 Registry, Early 911 Registry, etc.) newsletter. Pickup only.

Go to a swap meet, set it next to your chair and give it away to guys who appreciate it. You will have a good time.

Good idea!

Scorched earth here. Trash into the trash, sell anything with meaningful value, give away the rest. We try to follow the "use within 6 months or discard" rule of thumb, the local Goodwill gets lots of donations from us.

That looks like some really nice and somewhat valuable stuff. I would take a few pics and post on Classifieds here or eBay and make enough for a very nice dinner with your wife or whathaveyou.

Let someone else appreciate it for what it is. When it's gone, it's gone.

My parents house was full of a lifetime of stuff. And their parents stuff. I gathered all the relatives and let them take stuff. I found a quilt made by my great grandmother for her grandmother. I gave it to my cousin with grandkids. She cried at the gift.

Goodwill or garbage can.

This is what I did with all my 35mm camera stuff, tossed it all in a box and sold for $100, a few of the lenses were worth around $100 but it felt good to get the closet space back.

I still need to dig into a box or two of old rock and roll posters, so old I'm afraid they will crumble if I touch them. More reason to toss them but they are in the rafters of the garage so out of sight out of mind. Next to that box is another one full of Las Vegas stuff from the 80's, back when they had ash trays, match books, glasses with the the casino logo's on them.

Smaller house. Cluttered rooms and tabletops. Piles of magazines everywhere. Narrow pathways through the clutter, like game trails. Clutter should be deep, and tall...

When you pass on, the relatives will enjoy the scavenger hunt.
Throw a few $1 and $5 bills here and there so they think they're on to something...

CurtEgerer 09-25-2018 10:28 AM

Sold all of my stuff over the past few years. Only a few pieces remaining to be sold. The best one was trying to get rid of my Excellence magazines. 100s of them. I took them to a Porsche swap meet and tried to sell them for 5 for $1. I sold one single issue on Friday night because the guy's car was in it. Saturday I made a big sign - FREE MAGAZINES! No takers at all. So at the end of the day, I stacked them all up in front of the dumpster. Within 5 minutes, people were running from all directions and grabbing arm fulls. They were gone within a few minutes :rolleyes:

Great stuff!!
I once had a bunch of old maps that I was on the fence about keeping. I papered a couple of walls in my den with them. They stayed up for a few years, then I wanted a change and steamed them off. I got to see them every day for a few years. I can’t think of a better use.

jyl 09-26-2018 09:38 AM

I wouldn't toss or Goodwill. I'd sell on eBay, here, CL. That's prime man-cave stuff!

If that is too much trouble, I'd hand it all to someone who wants it.

For me, its about the waste. That's cool stuff and doesn't deserve to be in a landfill with last month's used diapers.

(Of course, you and I both have a borderline hoarding problem.)

Sunroof 09-26-2018 10:35 AM

"one man's junk is another's man's treasure".

Anything and everything has a value to someone out there. Once I got into sailboat racing, I decided to start collecting decades ago every America's Cup Official Program I could get my hands on. Some very rare (Old newsprint articles to beautiful glossy magazine type publications). I mean, who would want that stuff?! Well, their is value to a collector no matter what the subject matter is.....so, if you decide to sell, their is a number of outlets to go to, especially, good old Ebay. We love to throw stuff away only to realize someone else would pay to have it.

I would rather donate then throw away. That young mechanic who just opened up an independent Porsche repair shop would be blown away if you walked into his shop and said, "here, plaster these on your walls". Ah, but do not forget to get some receipt on his letterhead to get the write off!!

986Boxster 09-26-2018 06:58 PM

I have been selling my stuff on Ebay. At least who ever buys them appreciates them.

Sometimes If it does not sell I mark it down quite a lot. Someone always will buy it, maybe they resell it I don't know and is fine with me.
