Reloading---shot spill!

So I've refilled the shot bottle with #8 shot and am in process of screwing it back on my Mec reloader. all of a sudden the little red push cap pops out and several pounds of #8 shot goes everywhere. all over the dining room table, off the table and onto the floor, ugh! those little pellets bounce quite a bit too making it sound even worse. My wife in the next room asks if I've done something worthy of murder. she's heard that sound before but never on such a large scale.

So after spilling even more on the floor while cleaning up I used the hand vac to get in the table crevices. I shut it off and what happens? bunch of shot falls out.

ugh.

I'll get the floor vac.

lots of noise tells me I'm getting a bunch off the kitchen floor. it's a wood floor. so I'm not gonna make the same mistake I made with the hand vac by turning it off and having all that shot just fall back out the intake tube. I very smartly leave it running while I lift it up in an attempt to turn it upside down.

well this turned the vacuum into a shotgun of sorts as it sprayed dozens of pellets all over the kitchen counters and cabinets. yep quite a few pellets were still bouncing around in there when I lifted it off the floor.

sometimes you win and sometimes you're a dumbass.

I've come to the conclusion that there is pretty much no way to prevent shot from getting everywhere. Every single time I try to refill the shot bottle, some spills. Heck, yesterday, I was trying to deal with an "empty" bag of shot. It was a plastic bag inside of a canvas bag. I decided to recycle the plastic bag. Unbeknownst to me, they had sewn the other end of the canvas bag shut by sewing through the plastic bag. When I tried to remove the plastic bag, several hundred spheres of #9 shot in what I thought was an empty bag went everywhere. At least I have a dedicated reloading room. (I consider it a must with small children, some of who still put everything in their mouths.)

in 28ga I save about $4 per box if I ignore the sale value of the once fired shells. I'm on the fence about keeping up with it as the somewhat ready market for once fired 28ga AA hulls is solid.

12 and 20ga wouldn't be nearly as much savings so I don't bother.

I haven’t been reloading shotshells very long, it is definatly messy. I’m primarily reloading 16ga and 28 ga now. I’ll reload 12, but I really don’t save much, it’s more of a hobby.

Here is a pic of my reloading bench, I have a Dillon for pistol, and a ponsness Warren for shot shells. It’s clean here, now there are pieces of shot in every crevice.

That is a nice setup there dmc, might I suggest a raised rim around the outer edge, like on boat counters and tables. Helps to keep thing on the counter/ table surface.
A little opening at one corner makes it ease to collect small things off the surface.

Reminds me of a story my uncle told me. My granddad always dropped shot and they would collect it later. Usually buckshot he said. Then they (My father and uncle) would find a unsuspecting toad, and roll the shot past him. The poor toad could not resist schlopping up each piece. Until he was so heavy he could not move.

Sounds a little harsh now, but poor country kids did not have much entertainment in the past.
