Is there a name for the "new" music of today?
In recent weeks I have been in several business from large medical complexes to grocery stores, and small businesses. Most of the places are populated with what I presume are Millennials. There is usually some music playing softly in the background.
It is not objectionable, and I and NOT complaining about it. My question is a LOT of it is women with very high pitched voices, many of the lyrics are just the same short phrase repeated over and over and over and over and over, with no real story or description of an event or theme like the classic rock I prefer. (Yea, another old white dude here) And they are using what I have to assume is pure computer generated sounds akin to the way music sounded when we played music backwards trying to hear the hidden music we had heard stories about. The tone stops suddenly, and starts quietly and builds in volume. Again, it better than hearing RAP or bad Country and Western but I don't even know who the singers are or the name for the style of music. I am just clueless. It has to have a style or name. I remember the bad old days of Disco, and Bubblegum music. So what is that "style" of music called?

Trance?
There are too many new styles for me to recall them all. Personally what you describe is what I call "wonky music". |

Elevator music?
My dad loved that stuff... one day I was working with dad and my brother and he had that stuff on, Rodger Daltrey (singer for the Who) came on the radio singing a ballad... I turned to my brother and said "dad is listening to Rodger Daltrey!" Yes, music has become so electronic AND diversified it is all over the map... I kid you not my redneck (his words) neighbor listens to country rap. Not like the old days when we had record stores (yes, I said record stores) and there was rock, jazz, country, and classical sections.

Popular music today reminds me a lot of how it was in the 1950's before Rock & Roll broke out. It seems to be a handful of artists hired to sing songs a team of corporate songwriters and composer create for them. I'm not saying that the artists don't have talent, but they seem to be signing stuff that is poll-tested to sell the most.
I figure that something new and less snore-inducing will break out soon...

Start streaming KKXT out of Dallas.
KXT 91.7 | Independent Music Radio for North Texas Listener sponsored so they play what they want. A ton of great new artists and music out there that Live Nation and the mass market outlets won't touch. They play a fair balance of new upcoming artists, established artists (even some Gogar), and local bands. I discovered Gary Clark JR, Leon Bridges, Alabama Shakes, Lake Street Dive, and a bunch of other stuff way before they went mainstream.

Sounds like the currently popular and ever-expanding genre of EDM (Electronic Dance Music).
Started in Europe many moons ago, then made it's way across the pond into trendy nightclubs, raves, etc. It has since grown/evolved over the years with many sub-genres and into the US mainstream. |

Up until a year or 2 ago I had the local pop/hits station on the radio. Didnt listen to it much, but once in a while I found something I liked. Traffic... I tried again on a recent road trip and couldnt take it. I guess I'm old now.

My response would be "why does music suck so badly today?"
The Millennial Whoop Lyrics are retarded The vast majority of pop hits have been written by just two people....really. Compression etc.

If it plays on a radio station that repeats the same song 4-5 times between 8:00 a.m. and lunch... it's probably bad.
Pop-country nashville is the soylent green of the music industry. I can't even walk into a harbor freight, advance auto, autozone, tactor supply, or lowe's without losing my s#$%! Damn crap even turns on in the gas station pumps on gas station tv when you fill up. I know the brand of music you reference, and it's not far behind. It's like Mcdonald's food- it's not meant to be lived off of 24-7. Now- I'm so worked up I can't even get back to work! Thanks! Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 10-03-2018 at 09:00 AM.. |

For me personally, I go meh at what a lot of folks get excited about. Must be it was the people they listened to it with originally over the music itself.
I think this is the case for many. I prefer not to trash other people's music taste. But there are certainly places where I might change my visiting habits if I didn't like what they played. As Eric Coffey mentioned, the style of music being described is a multi-branched creature. I'm not sure of the name of the branches referenced. |

Yes there is good music still being made but it rarely gets into the mainstream.

When I need a shot of something good, I tune into WWOZ out of New Orleans. Just do it. It isn't always amazing. But it often is.
