Donning a Button Down Shirt

Left arm or right arm first?

I'm a left-arm-first guy who thought he'd switch it up this morning. Not a horrible experience, of course, but won't be doing it again.

The other day I noticed I always put my right leg into my underwear and shorts or slacks first. It is HARD to switch that up. Then I noticed I always put on my left shoe first. That was easier to force myself to change it if I think about it. If I just get dressed, it is back to the routine.

Both at the same time? I hold the shirt in front of me, put my hands inside at the top of the sleeves and swing the shirt around my left side and as it comes around the back, my left arm slides in and then the right arm goes in as it comes down. It takes like 1.5 seconds to do. Hard to explain but much easier than putting one arm in and then fiddling around trying to find the other sleeve behind you.

I only unbutton the top button so it is kind of like a polo for me.

Right arm first.

I always put my left leg in first in my drawers and pants.

Left shoe first as well.

Sometimes I do the left first, other times I do the right.
But the one immutable truth is that whichever one I do first, I always shake it all about, before proceeding to the other.

I only own one long sleeved button down shirt. It is a white dress shirt that goes with my suit. I last wore it for my wedding. I have a few short sleeve button down shirts, but just a few. I wear a t-shirt 95% of the time, and for dressy occasions, a polo shirt with three buttons. Most all the Polos have my company logo on them, or something Porsche related.

I can't remember the last time I wore a regular long sleeve button down shirt except on one old flannel shirt that I wear in the winter on REAL cold days (over my t-shirt) to keep my arms warm. I usually don't button the buttons.

Just leave them buttoned up and put them over my head like a polo.

Easy peasy

I don't think I've ever done it with a shirt, but I have done it with jackets. I don't have that hard a time putting a shirt or jacket on the other way, so I don't usually use the big flourish method that you're talking about.

Your shirts must fit poorly. (not a criticism, most folks wear button-ups that fit poorly because they are made to fit guys that are big around the middle so they usually fit like a tent.

Right then left.

Sometimes I try to leave the cuffs buttoned up and that always is a fail...
