My Laptop is struggling

Well, it works great for all business applications. But...

On a web browser, so much CRAP is being thrown at it. I can hear the fan spin up and feel the heat coming out as it struggles with all of the junk ads, videos, etc.

I think advertisers are being duped. They pay for ads we never look at or see, but they are "displayed" in the browser as we're trying to read the news.

Add an ad blocker.

You need an ad blocker and a script blocker. The newest exploit is to embed cryptocurrency mining into javascript.

My wife plays a lot of Candy Crush; the way the poor fan howls on her laptop makes me wonder if it's doing some sort of mining.

If you are using Chrome, stop.

Was my default for years but has become such a memory and process pig it's not even funny anymore.

Switched back to Opera (which used to be my go to years ago)

Built in ad blocking and VPN are great.

I am having increasing issues with Chrome. I do have ad-blockers on Chrome. On the laptop, I'm using Edge. So many times, the scripts fail under chrome and I have to switch to Explorer or Edge to complete something.

THe laptop is old, 5+ years, but was top of the line then. On CPU comparisons, it still ranks at a mid to low mid level today. The laptop's main issue is a lack of memory (4MB and it is not replaceable or upgradable).

Let me research an ad-blocker for Edge.

the cooling paste under the heat sink on the CPU can dry out over time
replacing the paste can reduce the heat problems

I have noticed certain places cause performance issues.

Often get fractional audio from add videos.

I just avoid going back to sights with problems.

Definitely something being a resource hog on some sights, even with a server as a computer.

Well James, if the laptop is 5 years old, it is time to get a faster one with more memory, ETC. Unfortunately website designers load their sites with ads and those all come from a web host that might be in China or Russia or ????. They take huge amounts of time to load and even if blocked the web pages will be slow. In effect you have to over power them and that can only be done with the fastest internet connection available in your area, the fastest computer and all running at 64 bits.

One of the things I do when loading a site with ads is to watch for whatever it is I want to get to such as the off topic forum here and as soon as it shows, click the stop symbol at the top of the browser to kill the ads from continuing to load. If I am left with little boxes with red x's in them, so what.

At work I have IE and FF. I have whatever the adblock du jour is installed, but even more importantly, I have "no script" installed. Sometimes a co-worker will send me a link to an Internet site, maybe some news site or newspaper or something like that. If I click the link and it tries to open in IE, IE struggles. If i copy the link over to firefox where I don't allow all of the horrible add and java crap (you can allow stuff that you trust or know is fine) then the link usually pops right up.

Took a lot of stress off my 2011 Laptop I use at the office, I am still using regular chrome at home but that machine is a 2016 model.

Don't use Edge (at least according to the security session I was at last week). Default anything that opens Edge to IE. I recommend ublock origin and ghostery for your non MS browsers. Vivaldi is pretty lightweight for a browser.

OK, I'm on the laptop now and back on IE. What ad-blocker is recommended for IE?

THIS!

You may want to keep other browsers available, for those times you need them.

Update: Switched to IE and added adblocker plus.

Note: I wasn't having the issue as much with Chrome, since I had an ad blocker installed. Chrome just doesn't work on lots of scripts.

I just pulled the trigger to up the memory on a mid-2012 MBP 13" from 4 GB to 8. $54 shipped. Not sure it will help with a i5 processor but I still love the hardware. I normally use Chrome for all the developer add ons and what was once a fast tool. I just brought up my activity monitor and there are 5 different GC processes running when it's up, I have ABPro installed and running as well. I just don't have the bandwidth to keep up with all this...starting to not care about internet anymore. Edit...haha as I am posting here.

I have added an Ad blocker for Edge as well. As I monitor the CPU, Edge seems to need less vs. IE11
