I've traveled 65 miles to help someone adjust the valves on their new to them 911.
Offered my garage to another to change his CV joints.

red-beard 11-12-2018 04:39 PM

I have adjusted the shift links on a few guys cars in San Diego. I ran a transmission rebuild clinic where the people brought Pizza and Beer. The 914 guys are much more community oriented.

I think we even re-sealed Mike Lesniaks's valve covers while driving through Mexico!

This thread reminds me of my question about why no Panamera forum here, the main posts were "nobody works on a Panamera"

Well I did, I would have loved help, but I also wanted to figure things out for myself.

If I had the time I would help a fellow enthusiast, just like I do with my neighbours all the time.

Yeah, that's kinda incredible.

Turning the tables around, that means the other party agreed to have him travel 6 hours to help them out on whatever the car needs.

I can't imagine imposing that on anyone or any friend for that matter, for anything which is not an emergency of sorts.

Call a local mechanic.

You and sugar, two peas in a pod! I’m not shocked.

I know Pmax, “that’s mean!”

And they don't even have to buy the parts or the project.

6hrs is 400 miles or so .... in one day... to work on someone's car....

Even if the enthusiast's OK and game, the wife (or hubby ... ) will surely veto and call crazy or suspect worse ;)

As with JB, one hour tops.

not in a strong, trusting, respectful relationship necessarily. not that im capable of one of those having never been married and in my early 50's, but that's not my point. or a marriage that allows you to wear the pants, but she's picking the color and cut of the cuff cause she's the shot caller. silly max...

Dude,

"Honey, I'll be driving to Tahoe today to spend a few hours with someone I met on the internet and will be back late in the evening."

is not going to cut it.

This reminds me of the adjustment one makes to buy a 911 in the first place. Or any hard to find car.
You want a Civic? There are 20 for sale within 30 mins. Want an SC? You'll might need to drive 3 hours.

3 hours to go wrench? Seems crazy, BUT....

Get up 6am
Arrive 9am.
Work until 6pm.
Home by 9pm
Just a day, and you got 9 solid hours of work in.

So, just like looking at a car for sale 2 hours away,
Get up 6am
Arrive 8am.
Test drive. Leave at 8:30am
Home by 10:30am.
Day is just beginning.

Get up early, and it's found time,

Some nutz have dropped, some are still waiting for them to and some never will drop.
My wife would be fine with it. Something called trust.

Have you ever considered the possibility that it's you and not us? Is it at least conceivable that your attitude and/or lack or cooperativeness and friendliness discourages volunteers from helping you out, and vice versa?

There are almost 4 pages of responses proving your theorem wrong, yet you continue to dispute the facts. Sometimes in life you need to reach out and ask for help; be humble and admit your ignorance; be open to taking a risk and making new friends; learning new things and making mistakes.

I seem to remember volunteering to help you with something with your car years ago and getting no response. I have traveled hundreds of miles to help other Pelicans. Have you ever volunteered to help someone?

One of my car guy friends has offered multiple times to help me with jobs, as I have offered to help him. Why? We are friends, but we also want to learn from each other. I don't think you want to bother learning. I think you would rather sit at the computer and troll. Criticize. Incite.

You're not a car guy, although you think you are. You're a guy with a car who thinks by owning it it gives you the right to an informed opinion. It doesn't. You don't participate. You don't contribute. You don't add to the hobby. You detract.

Go away. Nobody appreciates your opinion, nor do we want it.

I’ve helped and been helped by lots of people over the last 30 years. No pizza or beer involved.

I taught a good friend I met online how to change the brake pads on his 930. It was all by email. Several years later, he was teaching me to rebuild my 930 engine. Even came from Charlotte to Charleston to wrap it up.

Here’s another one. The day before a DE at Road Atlanta, I had just driven from Charlotte to my friends house in Alpharetta GA. He was in the middle of swapping out an intake gasket on his Mustang due to overheating. We finished about 10 PM and he took it for a quick spin. It overheated...

The only option was pull the heads and replace the gaskets. We dove in and finished at 3 AM. He took it for a spin. It didn’t overheat.

Went to bed at 4 AM and woke up at 6 AM. Drove to the track and had a great day. Both his Mustang and my 930 ran flawlessly.

He would do the same for me. Smartest guy I knew and my best friend. He passed away from cancer 2-1/2 years ago. **** cancer.

The both the generator and the throw out bearing in my 356 got fixed by "stopping by with the car and a 4 pack of really good beer" and "country style breakfast and beer"

By the same token, I've produced a lot of working network set ups and/or system configurations and/or source code for similar payment, perhaps a "here take the wife out" etc.

Relax.

Have participated in several "Tech Sessions" where the group worked on someone's car. And yes, there was pizza and beer. But was what was decided upon for refreshments, the gathering was all about and advertised as a tech session.

I hope you're joking. I've definitely helped a lot of people who were at the opposite end of the spectrum.

you so soft pmax… you so soft.

remember when I was going to look at a jeep in your hood last December and suggested you have me over for a slice of holiday fruitcake & a cup of cider in a market place forum thread? crickets...

I did not want to come to your house for fruitcake, although I was pretty sure it would be on the desert menu. no, I was ultimately going to suggest we meet up for a beer and some wings at the Dublin hooters if you'd only spoke dude...

heck, we even could have taken a photo in front of the red robin so your wife believed you were actually hanging out with a fat dude at a buffet...

silly pmax

James...I don't do green text...I'd even help Sammy....he needs help :). The concept of not "liking" someone due to politics just struck me as funny. This board is loaded with more "givers" than "takers".

There will be NO politics discussed at KEG party functions....can we add that to your platform for president :)?

I bet it was MadCorgi that helped fint ...not really, but I'd bet he would without hesitation ....I would too :)
