Nosireeebob! I like Sugarwood.....I wasn't a car guy before Pelican....hadn't even changed oil in decades...didn't have anything but this board to guide the way. I learned a LOT along the journey too...some of it about cars :)

A real gift exchange. It sort of petered out, but it used to be a hoot.

Plus, I can think of lots of instances when the internet hat would be passed for someone in need. (pre kickstarter)
Driving to someone's house to work on a car and socialize (in equal measure) aint nothin'.

And anyone who has ever been part of a race team, even on the periphery, like me, has spent a few all nighters getting a race car or race boat ready to run the next day - for free. It's what you do, simple as that.

I have seen some Norcal engine drop requests but not one lately. I have participated in a couple, one with another dozen helpers, and one just myself and the owner. Beer, coffee, donuts were around. There were a lot of times when local people came to my place to have something done. I'm free to help within reasonable driving distance so that work and the drive happen within the day. More than that, it has to be at my place.

I do it less than I used to but I used to travel all over the place making “Porsche house calls” but mostly helping people who came to my house. Some days the driveway and street would be full of 911 and people working on their cars or helping someone work on theirs. Right now, I’ve got a fried 911 motor on the stand and we’ve been working on it when he’s had time.

Here is a tip if you want people to help you, loan you expensive tools, etc: Put your location in your profile.

They didn't ask me, I asked them if I could help. I had a great day. Made some new friends. When it's a hobby, you can do it for fun and enjoy the ride.

I think the pizza/beer is more of a minor payback for helping a freind in need. I also think that rather than loaning someone a special tool, most guys will accompany the tool to make sure it is used properly, and returned promptly.

Maybe the epitome of what it "was".... the Barry restoration....one of Pelican's finest moment's since I've been here. It's never been about $, pizza, or even beer ;)....for most of us...who "get it"....jmho.

This reminded me of when I was a teenager racing RC.

Someone had a problem without a spare and someone else that had the spare would be at their table providing it.

I just like tinkering with cars... the pizza and beer is just an added benefit.

Two guys on board helped me out when I had my 911. One guy got word that my welder broke, came by and dropped his off. I think I gave it back 6 months later. The other knew I needed a transmission rebuild and invited me to his house to do a one day synchro replacement (and other stuff). I still talk to these two 15 years later. One all the time and consider him in my best of friends category. They are on the board members. Heck, one just gave (like free) a car.

I've realized there are those that like to help people and those that don't. Some people are so competitive or self centered they can't think of give anyone else any type of support or advantage though they are glad to take. I know the type and avoid the type. Life to short.

When you find good people, hold on to them.

Not hardly...But you did offer to help me find some furniture I was looking for...that was made in your area...And have had offers of help from folks on other projects. BTW...Looking for a good chimney guy in VA is anyone knows one (or someone with a bucket truck or 40 ft ladder that is not afraid of heights and wants to make a few bucks.

Jim Sims (great guy/engineer) actually designed and installed an AC system for my first 911 (his wife helped him with the install)...I was out of the country and could not help at all. Just dropped it off.
The car had never had A/C so it was a big job. He gathered the parts I didn't have, restored the vent system, found a couple of unobtanium parts, etc. Got me down to 32 degrees on a hot summer day. Best system I have ever seen in a 911. I paid for the parts and a couple tools (that I let him keep) for his next job.

I am probably going to visit Rawknees and get him to help me finish the A/C system I am installing now...He just does not know it yet.

I have even had pros (like the guys at SuperTec) help me out with my car back when they were in Costa Mesa. They stayed late one night to help me get back on the road home. Great guys.

As to the poster that suggested it was rising values, nah. In the p car world generally that's true, but most of those folks aren't on Pelican...they're on Rennlist:p

I dropped out because I was skunked 2 years in a row.

Many years ago when I purchased my first R53 Mini, I joined a Florida Mini Board. I met a guy named Bill on there, he saw I was going to do my rear sway bar and asked if I could help him with his. I said sure, I was not offered Pizza or Beer. That will be a requirement from now on.

He drove 3 hours to me, at the time I had a friend with a shop and 2 post lift that was empty on weekends, it was out behind his shop under an canopy and I was allowed to use it any time I wanted just had to be off it by Monday morning.

We both went over there and did both our cars on a Saturday morning.

Bill is my good friend to this day, he even came and stayed in my house when he evacuated from Hurricane Irma. We have met up and done Dragon runs in the past and plan on doing another in the next year or two.

I have a post on that same forum, I have some Mini specific tools in my garage and I have a standing offer to any member on there to shoot me a PM and we can meet up on a free weekend and I can help them with their car.

It is fun to meet car people and make friends that way.

This shows that you really don't know 911's well. One of the least major things you can do is drop the engine. I do it every time I have more than a couple simple things to do to the motor. Last time I did it alone I think it was on the floor in about an hour. Back in the car that afternoon. that was just for clearance for valve adjustment, and a chance to wash the engine bay.

If I set my garage up through the winter as to not allow the 911 to be stored inside, I will usually pull the motor just so it can store inside. It is a shockingly simple task on a 911.

And I live somewhere the 911 is only good for about 5 months of the year, and I see at least a few air cools on the road ever summer. I also daily drive mine for those 5 months. Mine is a 76 with 237000 miles on the clock.
