Transaction Outside of Ebay for Item

I am quite certain I am not blazing any trails here, but I thought I would put it here anyway. I have some computer stuff I have posted on Ebay and have received an offer for the lot at a price a bit lower than I was hoping for, but I will live.

He proposed we transact outside of Ebay which will save me some fees. He has outstanding ratings [for transactions within Ebay] so I can trust him on that accord.

Moral dilema. Wouldn't Ebay catch on if I just decided to close out an auction shortly after I posted. Clearly they would be able to see the 'counter offer' banter.

Wink

I bought some motorcycle boots form a guy on Ebay, contacted him and made a cash offer as he was 10 miles away. He agreed , I went and paid for them, but he said he got a nasty-gram from them for doing that.....for what it's worth

It’s totally fine, I have sold a bunch of cars that way. It’s not like they have actual people monitoring activity.

1) Start using private email or telephone instead of eBay message system.
2) Then you both agree that you will send each other a "fake" message telling him you're keeping the items
3) Have him send you a money order and then you ship

*item #3 is optional. You could probably still use PP and it wouldn't matter.

Ebay will send you a nasty note if they detect language in your messages that they feel will take the transaction outside of their platform.

Yep. I would rather deal outside of eBay. Especially since you're gonna pick it up...

I tend to do what suits me, not what suits eBay.

I am not a lawyer but this is the way I see it. If you had not advertised it on ebay it would not have been so readily noticed by prospective buyers. You have used the ebay medium so I would come clean with ebay and ask what you should do. I would think there is something in the fine print so they can protect themselves in this regard.

Good luck trying to sell anything else on ebay as there is a chance that you could be blacklisted.

I wouldnt do it. I never do. Its no benefit to you and you can get in trouble with ebay. He is just trying to get it at the low price so he doesnt have to bid for it. Its alot easier for you to let the listing run its course and if your lucky you will get more money. If you dont want ebay fees then list it on craigslist and deal with the broke weirdos.

Does ebay ever set people up? Wouldn't surprise me......

Agree with these two posts, I've done this more times that I remember. I've literally sold hundred and hundreds of items on eBay.

You don't owe eBay anything. You pay for the privilege of listing your items on their platform. You are their customer and as a seller they do give you short shift in an dispute with a buyer.

The buyer is held innocent until proven guilty, the seller guilty until proven innocent.

eBay is a business. You used their business to find a buyer. Do the deal and pay eBay like you would expect if it were your business.

C’mon guys...think for a minute.

While I agree in sentiment...not for eBay...I won't use them anymore. I watched a high trans seller get his 100% rating back....total scammer. Got my $500 back though (POS amp) ....
