JD mower deck parts question...
Purchased a used (250 hrs approx) JD GT110 w/ a 54" deck for my dad recently. All three zerks are clogged, no idea how the spindles are internally, and the belt just broke. No biggie...but when looking online, (Sid's place
 ), I see "8TEN" spindles, belt, (blades), etc. for $130. Any experience?Or pay the JD premium of $60 for the OEM belt, and fix the spindles... It sure be easier/faster to replace 'em if they were worth a crap... |

While the belt is off, take the zerks out, use a pick to get any dry grease out of the way, shoot some PB blaster or Croil in and let soak, pop in new zerks, if it takes grease put a few pumps in and spin each spindle by hand. If they feel okay, let them ride and slap a new belt on.

Thank gent's...my Scag doesn't have zerks....I assume it has grease though
. I'm always needing something at dad's...that's in my garage though..oh well.

I have the same mover w/54" deck. Bought with 252 hrs, now has 310.
I say the new aftermarkets parts won't hold up nearly as well as the old JD stuff.....Do what Nick said and grease them once a year after that. I get my belts from Amazon or Ebay. Dealer is 25 miles away, so one round trip to order, wait a week and another round trip to pu isn't worth the time/effort. It's a great mower for the money.

I have a JD dealer really close to my house (maybe 2 miles) and I have been pleasantly surprised that they often beat amazon and other online retailers on price. The only drawback is that they don't always have everything in stock (it is a small dealership).

Didn't have my grease gun with me yesterday, but don't think they're gonna be an issue after removing the deck and having better access. Paul, I've had one of those fancy-smancy locking thingys since you first posted about them...do you actually think it will fit on the zerks...LOL
. Now I gots a favor to ask, for someone with time, a bigger screen than I have, and better eyes....I need a JD parts number for this bracket...and why I need a new belt...crappy bracket imo  JD G110 54" deck: pic coming later...dang ain't gonna happen (yet)... To the mower deck. https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/sidebyside/equipment/57029/referrer/navigation/pgId/2695134 The tensioning bracket is GY21401 John deere put sealed bearings in many of the newer products so all greasing does is keep moisture away. The aluminum spindle housings wear, and the bearings will be loose in the housing after a few years of use. John Deere sells the whole assembly at a reasonable price, and Stens sells a quality replacement assembly at a better price. Another trick for getting zerks with hardened grease in them to take grease is to heat the zerk a little with a propane torch to soften the old grease up a bit. One other tip... The small black gauge wheels should be about 1/4"-1/2" in the air when mowing... the deck should be supported by the tractor lift arms, not the little wheels. They are just designed to keep the mower from scalping on uneven ground. If run on the ground they will shake the deck apart, and also cause the rear deck hangers to break off the deck at the welds.

What kind of grease are you guys using ? Mower bearings live in a harsh environment that's why I'm asking . And there are so many different types/colors/marine/synthetic etc. etc. just wondering what is considered good enough . I have two JD decks that I need to service over the winter months .

I own a powersports repair business.... Motorcycles, ATV's, boats...and I also do commercial, and residential lawn equipment repair... After close to 50 years of doing this stuff, type of grease usually isn't the issue.... Lack of grease is... However I use high temp EP grease in all my customers equipment... Marine grease is good too, since it has properties to protect against corrosion from water. John deere used to sell green grease which is kind of nice...

. Thanks on the deck "stress" tips...methinks you're describing a likelyhood. Deck round "pulley" cover popped off the other side...JB weld all around didn't hold either...dad has some big ol' trees with rough roots, etc....light bulb goes off ...Grease....I grab the Moly stuff from Northern Tool...good enough? |
