The reason a particular song touches someone emotionally is as inexplicable as it is personal. And, it can never be right or wrong. I'm not a fan of "Wind beneath my Wings" but I've seen grown men of superior strength of body and mind tear up over it. Same with "Sail Away" by Christopher Cross or "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot. There are a million songs that don't affect me personally that are life altering for others.
I'll be willing to bet that many or most of you would think that "Good Friday" by the Cowboy Junkies is barely listenable pap, but to me it embodies all the sadness and goodness of (my) life. I don't know why, but it conjures up memories from a place deep inside that I can't identify in words yet does not fail elicit an emotion on that razor edge between laughing and crying. Another might be "Champagne With You" by Bruce Cockburn or "Bad News From Home" by Randy Newman or "Late for the Sky" by Jackson Browne Maybe I've revealed too much, but it's just my belief that there is a 1 or a zero, an off or an on, a go or a no go when it comes to the music that touches the individual human spirit. It just happens. And it is always very, very special. And I embrace it. (And then there is the guilty pleasure, - you'll never see me turn the radio off, only up when "Urgent" by Foreigner comes on, but that's a different thread. And don't tell anyone. I know the song really sucks on so many levels, but I can't help but like it!)

I agree with the above. I don’t think you can make any judgments about a person based on whether they like LAR or any other specific song. But you can perhaps make some judgments based on how people responded to the original post, and in my case the answer is that I can be an @ss, even to such well respected and valuable contributors to the board as Zeke/Milt. For that I apologize. I just don’t like Seger. Maybe it’s that when I came of age in my farming community there were two FM stations, both of which seemed to alternate Jack and Diane with Like a Rock and It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me as three of the four songs in their roatation. I can’t stand John Mellancamp (previous topic) and I don’t like Seger, which is odd because I love their close cousins Neil Young and CCR, Petty, Woody and Arlo Guthrie (hey, Thanksgiving is coming up) The Doors, the Beatles, and anything by the F’ing Who. That’s their full name, by the way. But I didn’t have to dismiss Seger or LAR with my original response. I should not have done that and I don’t mean to be a jerk with my curt response. Like all art, if the painting or song speaks to you, it is great art. Seeger and Like a Rock speaks to Zeke and a lot of other people and that means that it is great art, and perhaps something I should revisit as I get older, and hopefully wiser, even if I’m running against the wind.

^^^ well....I didn't think amyone was out-of-line on this thread..hope Milt didn't take my posts wrong either. It's just a song by one of my favorite artists back then....I NEVER want to hear Layla or Stairway To Heaven again either
 "Against The Wind"....spring break in Ft Lauderdale....road tripping memories for me.. Milt has his with LAR....with no commercials...I would not have an opinion....but it sucked

When I'm playing at the Bistro, my playlist will alternate between songs I have written and material drawn from the "oldies". I played "Baker Street" last Friday and a guy even older than me thanked me for playing the oldies. Sorry, but both Layla and Stairway have been on my playlist at times.
Maybe you should avoid the Bistro on the nights I'm playing. Best Les
