Where were you when Bob Seger's "Like a Rock" was popular?
Came out in '86, hit no. 1 but really hit the masses as part of Chevy truck's ad campaign '91-'04. Also in a 2005 film. So that's a nearly 10 year time frame that you were likely to hear the song. Now, if, how and when did you associate with it?
For me, I was on a framing crew in northern Alabama in the summer. Wasn't my first choice of work but I had to work. CA had chased me away during the recession of '91-92. I was in AL during '93 limping about work-wise. So at 48 YO I was humping. Never sweated so much my life. I'm sure it purified me somehow. ![]() Like a rock. (Inspired by Tru6's thread .) I was well past Seger by then (a huge fan for a decade), had turned off the radio/tv, immersed in cds (particularly blues & blues rock).....honestly...I think of a damn truck when I hear it

I Was vaguely aware that it was a song before it was an annoying truck commercial.

To answer the question, though, that would have been around the beginning of my career in aerospace, and thus my first stint in AOG before I bailed from that and got the whole family thing started. I probably listened to that song blaring from some crappy boom box inside of a gutted airplane with rivet guns and other background noises to make it really special. What is (was?) the Hank Williams Jr. NFL song? Same thing - I paid no attention until it became unavoidable as that annoying NFL song.

Three years out of high school. Like Masraum few cares in the world. Living at the NJ shore this song along with numerous Bruce songs this was one of our anthems. My first legal year of drinking.

I was about a junior in college. I hated it when it was on the radio and then was doubly annoyed when it became an obnoxious truck ad soundtrack. So I spent a little more than a decade avoiding that song.
I’m also a Ford truck man.

Just outta high school. Seger wasn't too popular around my neck of the woods or maybe socal in general. No one really talked about him much. I knew it was him but remember that song more about the Chevy commercials.

Working. Married to Cindy (who else?) and raising a then 16 year old daughter who constantly told us she couldn't wait to be "free". After getting her RN ticket, she did move out, not having a clue who had really gained freedom.
To the kid's credit, she's now working as an RN with IT skills..a consultant with a firm that creates programs for hospital records..making the big buks, but has to commute via air couple of times per week. I'm keeping tongue in cheek, not asking her how that freedom is working out for her...

Identified hugely with the song.
When I was 19, I was working on the farm "for peanuts". About 180 lbs of not much more than muscle on a 6'3" frame. A decade and a half later when Like A Rock came out, there I was with a family and career. Now I sing "Forty years, where'd they go" because " Forty five years" kind of breaks up the meter. I don't think I ever bought a Chev truck because of the song, but I would think of the series of Chev and GMC pickups we had on the farm when I was a kid. I've never added it to my play list for gigs because of the bridge. I don't have Bob's range. Best Les

Very popular, RRHF member - a rock n roller. Music is oveplayed especially the truck commercial.
A better Chevy truck commercial IMO, Bill Withers, "Lean On Me". https://youtu.be/fHv5c2rPXN8

3 years out of high school, partying with some buddies regularly, working at a Bank processing checks, and driving a green 1978 Datsun 280Z. I think Sammy Hagar , and Pink Floyd was my go to music, Never really paid Bob Seger any attention.

I liked (like!) a lot of Seger, but mostly the power chord stuff, songs like Fire Down Below, Sunspot Baby, Hollywood Nights, (there's a great story about him singing that one, the passion he felt) Her Strut, Horizontal Bop, Nutbush City Limits. I can remember places where those songs were part of my soundtrack, but I've just never been into his ballads, and despite trying, Like A Rock doesn't make me think of anything but Chevy billboards.
(And I'm willin' to bet he made more money for just those three words than he did for the rest of his whole library combined)
