Definitely not an expert, but I know enough about fall protection to know if I’m hooked up...

Geez, that was tough to watch. I guess the guy is panicked, but wouldn't it have been easier to hang from the axle with both hands in a controlled manner instead of using his right hand to hold on to the pilot? He probably did want to protrude from the bottom?

You'd think they have someone do a safety check before take off and have people test hang into the harness before take off.

I am not too shy about taking risks but flying isn't my cup of tea. I did a test ride in an old Cessna once with my kid at the helm. That cured me of wanting to fly in anything small ... I have been in engineering too long not to know about Murphy ...

At what point in the 'flight' do you choose to remove your hand from the pilot's leg to roll the dice on something more practical? Relying on 1 arm to hold up your 200 lbs of vacation body? THOUSANDS of feet in the air? with a 40mph wind?

It turned out pretty great, considering; and kudos to the guy for having a good attitude (as far as we can tell.)

I used to sky dive back in the seventies. Then I got married, bought a house, had a kid etc. Like Zorba the Greek said, "the full catastrophe". Not that bad really but it ended my skydiving. Back then hang gliding was still pretty much in it's infancy. Whenever someone showed up at the drop zone on crutches, it was usually explained that he "frapped" under his hang glider.

Doing a hang test to check the harness and connection to the glider was part of the preflight routine when I did a tandum hang glider flight. Good fun!

I did do a tandem paraglide flight in that same area above Interlacken Switzerland, pretty sure I enjoyed it more than that guy did. Beautiful area to fly in. We were up for over a half hour. So this pilot did what he could to get the guy down ASAP. Scary!
It's so steep there that the ground falls away below you as you lift off.

Cheers Richard

The guy in charge could not immediately turn around and stall/crash uphill ? The other guy could have fallen to his death at any time...

I wouldn't have lasted 30 seconds holding on with one hand.

Wow that was an amazing video and incredible the guy was able to hold on for that long. As an arm chair quarterback I would have hoped the pilot forced a landing on that first opportunity.

In the late 70's I was in the hospital for a couple days and shared my room with a guy who shattered both of his legs and pelvis due to not being hooked into his glider properly. His cries of pain are still burned into my memory some 35 years later.

No.

The harness attach points are at the top of the air frame support structure and the occupants essentially "dangle' from that attachment point.

Pitch is controlled from the horizontal bar the pilot has his hands on. With the guy hanging from the bar, the pilot is having a very hard time controlling pitch since he has to overcome the weight of the passenger.

Yaw is a whole other matter but influenced by the passenger in this case.

That is why they came in so hot - the pilot could bleed not off airspeed with pitch.

Seems like he could have just let go right after they took off....perhaps....hard to know just going by the video. He was probably still processing at that point.

I also wonder why he didn't notice he wasn't connected up top BEFORE they took off..

Easy to be an armchair QB, of course.

Glad he was able to hang on.....crazy stuff!
