The "stop living in the past" retort seems to be the go-to for those who suddenly become defensive for some reason, when others are critical of a marque's design changes. Progress is good and all, but "new" doesn't always equal "better".
Sometimes design changes work, and sometimes they can be can be ill-conceived/implemented, rushed to make deadlines, or simply solve problems that never existed. All just to have something "new" for the next model year...

From an aesthetic design standpoint:

The original 911 style/shape was virtually unchanged from 1964 to 1994. I wouldn't consider Porsche as "stuck in the past" during that stretch.
They just seemed to be more mindful/careful back then with the incremental design changes, as to not depart too far from the iconic design that got them to where they were.

For me, the 993 was a step forward, the 996 several steps backwards, the 997 a step forward (course correction), and the 991 sort of "meh"., etc. YMMV...

Touché ...although in my defense, I sold my E36 in 2009. Perhaps it was a poor choice for a user name, lol. I am guilty of currently owning a base 986, which is pretty analog for a modern car.

A few months ago, I bought a 2013 991. Like most have said here, it is a GT car more than a pure sports car, which suits me fine as I’m not so much into track days but do enjoy long jaunts down the autobahn, which I am taking advantage of during our time here in Germany.

I suppose if I sounded defensive in my original post, it wasn’t intentional, I certainly understand the concept of different strokes for different folks. It just seemed amusing how fast and harsh the criticism was. Time will certainly tell if this new car is better or not but I see some things about it that I find very appealing.

I agree with you that the 993 was a huge step forward aesthetically on the exterior. I happen to prefer the 996 over the 997 but part of that is probably bias since we own a 986 but the other part is that the 997s interior seems kind of bland to me. I love the 991. To me, it is the best looking since the 993.

I actually like the 991 styling more than the 992. Maybe it looks better in person?

I don't know if this means anything but I cant find any pics of a black 992 other than the test mules. My guess this is deliberate because black hides the new obvious cosmetic feature of the blacked out front and rear facia. I'm sure we'll see some body color facia soon and it might look a whole lot better.

Experience and involvement? I think analog will become the new novelty. You can see it in the cars now becoming classics, they offer modern levels of performance but with a true experience, not just lots of computers.

Yup. Prices have gone up over the last two years. Or look at the 1990s sports cars, they are all appreciating quickly. All cars that you can drive daily that give a much different experience than new cars.
