internet earnings

I am not really sure how I feel about this. The kid made $22m reviewing toys. All but $1m from ads.

Free enterprise. He did not make one cent from me.

I am jealous. I wish I could make 22 million doing something 100% legal and not physically damaging like pro sports.

That's it...nor could I pick the guy out of a line-up.

I'm guessing you are referencing this guy:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/12/11/6-year-old-made-11-million-in-one-year-reviewing-toys-on-you-tube/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.22e40c445620

In June, TubeFilter ranked “Ryan ToysReview” as the most viewed YouTube channel in the U.S. for the 40th week in a row. In September, NBA player Kevin Durant was featured in one of Ryan’s videos performing a children’s science experiment.

Ryan’s popularity makes perfect sense. He’s got every small kid’s dream job, opening toys and playing with them, day after day. He’s smiley, too, totally nonthreatening to parents and children alike. No bad words. No preachy banter. He’s a miniature Mister Rogers but without the sweater and slippers.

Finding a niche and exploiting it takes talent. I admire his pluck. His parents creep me out.

Influencers are the new Marketing Stars.

They have agents or agencies that represent them.

Average Influencer makes $1-2k per hour.

We have one guy who commands $20K and hour with a two hour minimum.

You would think that's nuts but it's on par with what a manufacturer will pay for some morning talk show placement.

If these people have the personality to build a large following then they should absolutely be able to monetize it.

Is that the term, "Influencers"?

Makes sense...marketing is eyeball driven: I am headed out to check on a smoking deal I found on a PennySaver flyer.

Wish me luck!

Agree with all of your post, btw, parents still creep me a bit.

I watched half of one video and my opinion is that it should be used for birth control in this over-populated world.

A childhood friend has a son who is a huge pop star from YouTube, 14 years old and making $$millions. The dad, (our friend), had to go on sabbatical from his executive level job to chaperone him on tour. The kid has something like 18 million YT subscibers and a similar number on IG. Crazy...

The story in the OP is actually not that surprising or strange if you contemplate the overall size of the internet economy. They have managed to slice off one tiny, almost infinitesimal piece of it. Think of the size of the entire internet economy, (IE), worldwide that did not exist 23 years ago. Sure, there are Gates and Bezos, Facebook and Google but the real story is how much time people throughout the world spend on the web. The $$ that we all spend is freaky enough but the time and energy has an economic cost that is staggering, the amount of lost productivity, % of your life you will have spent on sites like this one and social media, etc., etc...

Economists have ways of attaching monetary values to people's time but the number is so large that mathematicians haven't invented it yet. If the internet was a country, it would dwarf the USA and China together, if properly measured, IMO. And it did not exist as a market force, (or barely did), 23 years ago.

Yup, that's what they are called.

youtube, twitch, twitter, etc....

Basically replacing traditional (as we've known it to be) marketing and PR.

The youngans of today don't consume media the way we did.

They barely watch TV.

Don't really listen to radio.

The internet has made it possible for them to find the content that interests them and also to dictate their consumption schedule.

Static time based content, (a fixed TV schedule or radio playlist), does not apply to them.

They don't even DVR stuff.

Youtube and the like have made it possible for anyone to become the next Ellen or Oprah.

It's the American Dream.

We all know $22m is serious money... How can I get work like that?

I've never begrudged someone doing well but for someone so young that's just amazing.

A agree with what Denis wrote. This internet thing is huge!

The only part that is BS is the lying parents. If you watch interviews with them, all they ever say is "this is all him(the kid), he enjoys doing it"

I'm sure he does like playing with toys, however it's not "all him" a 6 year old does not know how to shoot video, edit, upload, market it, monetize it on YouTube, etc. That's 100% the parents. I don't blame them for doing it but to constantly act like they have nothing to do with it is a lie.

I don't want to sound like a miserable old sod, or worst still a hippy, but life's about being happy. And I think a lot of these super rich types sold their soul a bit too much for the money.

I'm fairly well off, but what really makes me happy is walking with the dogs on the beach, and hanging out with good friends. I don't think a whole lota money would attract the right sort of friends.

I think that stuff falls inline with the YouTube videos of people playing video games. My nephews are obsessed with watching those channels and in turn those people make money. Just to me doesn't make sense on making so much money on a non marketable skill set.

Some counties don't even habe 24 hour electricity yet we have these people making millions on YouTube.

What is the non marketable skill you are referring too?

Playing video games?

These are the well compensated salesmen of our day. Who here doesn't know (even a few here are) that guy that makes a crazy living pushing a product they had nothing to do with? The salesman that leverages their connections into ridiculous commission pay (only ridiculous if measured by input effort) compared to those that actually create/created the product. These kids/folks are no different, they are every bit as worth it as the great salesman, it's a formula...bring me the heads and you'll be compensated.

Dumbest post of this thread.
No, every kid does not think he will get 50,000,000 views.
