toslink TV audio cable help

I finally have some time to get this TV hooked up to my 5 channel system. Its a Yahama receiver. I have HDMI out from receiver do I need to have a HDMI back from TV into another port or will a Toslink cable do for audio? Its a new TV, it works off the net, should I hook up HDMI from TV out and back into port #1 in back of receiver for sound? Will that work?

Goddang Yahama doesn't come instructions and have to read it off computer. Some reason, the receiver doesn't read input from device or there's no signal coming out. I am pulling my hair out trying different configuration and no workee.

The HDMI cable carries both video and audio.
You shouldn't need to use the Toslink cable at all.
(if I am understanding your set-up)

HDMI carries digital audio so if you should not need toslink unless you have an audio only in/out put.

Do you have a cable box? If not, just hook the HDMI cable from the TV (any HDMI slot will work) to the TV input on the Yamaha. Then you'll have audio from whatever is playing on the TV into the Yamaha and should play through the surround sound speakers as long as that output is selected on the Yamaha.

Think of the Yamaha as the brain. All audio and video need to go to it, then you output the video to the TV, and the sound to the speakers.

What model Yamaha do you have?

RX-V 479. Bought a couple years ago, I finally have time to monkey with it. It doesn't seem to read input signal from any of the HDMI slots. We got rid of cable tv/box. Its just off the net now. If I understand you correctly, connect the HDMI output from TV and plug into any HDMI input slot in back of Yahama unit? I only half head of hair left since lunch. If this damn thing doesn't work I will be bald by dinner.

New dumb question. Do HDMI cables function as out and input at the same time? Do I need to have one going to and another coming from TV to Receiver? I think the answer is yes?

Just the one HDMI will do it.

That will tell you at least the receiver is working and connected correctly.

It doesn't matter is its input or out, it will read the signal on both?

Receiver now tells me decoder is off to HDMI (I think?). Discovered that there's no way to turn it back on because its automatic and it senses signal by itself.

I know HDMI input is working because kids hook up their games directly to it and it works fine

I use just the one HDMI cable between my smart tv and AV receiver..nothing else.
No Toslink..although the receiver will accept one.

Prob an obvious question...but have you switched through all the inputs on the receiver?
Are there more than one HDMI out on the tv? Try them all.

There are 6 and none of them is working or receive any signal. I am thinking something in the set up. I may have to switch on something, but I have pressing buttons for the past hour just testing or out of frustration.

Didn't read all this thread...but here's a recent HDMI experience on a soundbar I tried. HDMI in and HDMI out....doesn't mean a signal will passthru....live & learn

I think that's what I am dealing with. Will have to try what Biosurfer suggest with the Toslink. Turned around when I got near the parking lot of our local Bestbuys. Cars lined up for the entire block like if they are giving away free TVs. Nuts. Fight another day tomorrow

what are you trying to control through the receiver?

Say you have a ps4 your trying to put through the receiver you first need to have an hdmi ran from the ps4 to the back of the receiver to something like the game hdmi channel, from there you would need to run an hdmi from the hdmi out in the back of the receiver( usually labeled monitor 1) to hdmi 1 on your tv.

Make sure the hdmi is turned on in the receiver and your tv is set to hdmi 1 in source on your tv.

Every component you want to have the receiver control must be ran in it, then into the tv.

Please let’s start over.

So you have a TV. No cable box? Just TV and antenna maybe, and internet stuff that you do right on the TV with the tv remote?

Run HDMI out of the TV to HDMI in of the receiver. Select that input on the receiver. Listen to sound. Done.

If the TV does not have HDMI “out”, use the toslink “out” and run to toslink “in” of receiver. Select the toslink input of receiver. Listen to sound.

If you’re having fits with the receiver google the manual or just list the model number here and there’s plenty of fellas here to interpret the gobbledygook for you!
