question on smart phone and map/Waze

Hi guys,
my old smartphone works fine with Waze. Recently, I formatted the SD card and Map and Waze doesn't work anymore. I reinstall it but it keep saying "uh-oh something went wrong".
I pull the SD card off then it works. Put the SD card in again, it said uh-oh .... again.
I took the SD card to my computer to see if it fail. No, it works fine.
Anyone know what happen?

Would help to know what kind of phone. Some phones can be set up to run/store app data on the SD card. Probably need to remove and reinstall the apps.

It's pretty much, got to be an Android, right? And yes, they can be setup to run apps from mem card or not. Good call. I haven't been an Android user in about 3 years, so had forgotten that it's an option.

Yeah and they can also tend to be a bit finicky on how the SD card was formatted.

I never use the OS's built in utility.

I only use this, https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

In addition to the formatting, it might be a an issue with not being able to "hot swap" your SD card.
Even though you insert it, you might have to drill down into the phone's storage menu and "mount" the card each time it's re-inserted.

It was working fine before. The problem came after I reformat the SD card and reinstalled.
What I did to run from SD card is installing the app on the phone, then did "move to card". Funny thing is that after moved to card multiple times, it still not running when card is in the phone. When card is off the phone, the map works fine.
I also tried to figure out the "mount" function but can't fingure it out. The Mount option is only available when the card is off the phone. When it is in the phone, the mount option is gray out.
Yes, it is an android.

That is not logical.

If you've moved the app to the SD card then it should not run when the SD card is removed.

Why?

Moving the app to the SD card means the app is no longer on the phone, it's on the card.

It sounds like the phone thinks the app has moved but really has not.

Remove the card then delete the app from the phone, reinsert card. Does app come back?

I'd delete the app and reformat the card using SD Formatter and try reinstalling.

There are currently 11,898 Android devices in google plays developer portal device list with a large percentage being simple basic phones, the ones you get for free.

Since the original iPhone in 2007 there are only ~34 distinct iOS phone and tablet models. One could argue we don't even need to count iPads since they are really just iPhones in a bigger form factor.

As a software developer I can test my app on any 1 random iOS device and with nearly 100% certainty am comfortable that it will work on all devices across the board.

For Android testing we only bother with Samsung, Pixel, Moto and LG because trying to perform compatibility testing beyond the flagship Android devices is unrealistic.

Let's not even get into the manufacturer /carrier specific versions of the OS that Android devices ship with.

Go into settings and then Apps

Click on the App (Waze in this case) and look for the settings. Change the default location to your main storage, not the SD card.

Adding to the above,

Click Storage, and then storage used.

Set to "device memory"

It sounds silly, but it is really does that... Thinking about it, everything happened was after I formatted the SD card with the phone (silly me, the card was working fine for years). Maybe the phone messed up the SD card trying to format it. So, I took the SD card to the PC to see if I can re-format it. It turned out that the SD card has problem. I can see files in it, but can't delete nor format it. Problem found. I stick the new SD card in the phone it it works flawlessly.
Lesson learn, if it's working, do not mess with it
Thanks guys.

You were seeing the files, but couldn't do anything with them? Most SD cards have a little switch on the side that you can slide up/down. It's a write protection switch. Make sure you don't flip the switch accidentally. That could cause problems too.

And that ladies and gentlemen is the difference between the manufacturer owning the os and them being created by different entities...

It's a micro SD. Sorry, I wasn't clear but I thought all phones are using micro SD, none is using normal size SD card.
