Far too many times, I am doing a building project, or plumbing, or electrical/electronic that I will go search for some part that I have kept that will save me a 20 mile round trip into town.

I can't count the number of times I have used recycled old bolts/washers/nuts/screws to fix a piece of equipment that takes a special size that I have in one of my bins.
The best thing I ever did was to get two of the 18 drawer parts organizer cabinets. I have different sized screws, nails, bolts, washers, nuts, hardware, auto lightbulbs, air hose components, bushings, cotter pins, snap rings, O-rings, etc, etc...all at a glance.

The first thing that needs to be done is get organized , that may or may not involve throwing stuff out . In many cases just the act of organizing results in a clean workable space . The next thing is the hardest in my opinion ........... you have to MAINTAIN and have the discipline to not get back to a cluttered mess ! Much easier said then done . For those of you exposed to 6S/Kaizen principles everything has a place , is labeled and put back EVERY time after use . One of the hardest things to do is to NOT use the work bench as a storage shelf ! That can very quickly get out of hand and now you don't have a bench to work on . There are some great garage forums out there that you can learn from and get tips you can tailor to fit your particular situation .

I do that as well. I can't count how many times I have been in the re-assembly stage and come across a bolt or fastener that was chewed up, buggered threads, or rusty. I just go over to a drawer of old bolts and parts that I throw in that drawer. A minute of looking, and here is the replacement. It is a drawer of stuff one only gets from a lifetime of collecting bolts and screws.

Just recently I had to go to the back of my workbench - cabinet and pull out the bolt cutter. I have had it many years and it has been used just a few times. It sure beat getting out the cutting disc or the saws all, and was way faster.

I am an admitted tool junkie. It all fits in my 3 car oversized garage and workspace area. I can open the HUGE doors on my El Camino all the way, and not hit anything. My wife's Macan is in the middle bay and the door open easily all the way, and the 911 is on the opposite bay from my work area. Since it gets the least use, I do pull it closer to the wall than necessary just to have more room to walk from the kitchen to outside and the 911 is completely out of the way, under a car cover.

I love getting rid of old stuff I don't use. been utilizing facebook marketplace (I'm not really on facebook--just a fake screen name thing to facilitate stuff like marketplace) and it's working well. I don't get stuck on what I think it's worth-just keep lowering price till it goes and if it doesn't then off to the dump with it!

my wife on the other hand loses her mind if I try to get rid of anything she's saved. even damn shopping bags. I tell her if she dies before me or runs away with another man the first thing I'm doing is having a dumpster placed in front of the house. then it'll all go!

it's also 85% full of "stuff"

I used to have an old Castrol oil box that was full of old nuts, bolts, etc. it was my go to when I needed something.

Of course, they came from years of working on cars.

Obviously, car manufacturers used too many fasteners, because I put them back together with fewer fasteners. 🤪
