Car shopping woes
I stopped at the local Porsche dealership to look at the GT2's they had. Well there was a 32k 996 there with a color I had never seen.
I figured I would ask what trade in value they would give me for my 2000 box S with 54k. They originally came in at $5k. I said yeah no thanks. They soon doubled and dropped the price. The gap would be 16k in cash. I went in to take for a ride thinking if I was blown away I would do it. Now I did like the car, I just didn't feel it was worth a 16k difference. Yeah I know a 911 but I was expecting to get in and be wow, what a car. I wasn't. It was so unexciting I was shocked. Now where it gets strange is I still loved the car because as I get older, it was very comfortable. The Box is definitely more engaging but The 996 is more GT. I really don't think I'm paying for performance now, I'm just paying extra for a back seat and the 911 lore. The performance difference just isn't there. My son who came along thought I was nuts. He said he got the 911 mystique thing but after driving said the same thing I thought, I just didn't want to say. The 996 did have cup holders though. Still a beautiful car. No point, just writing my thoughts. |

Cars and Cappuccino

What color? because it just kinda just looks like silver in the pic. And it's a 996, so.....

Your Boxster looks really good with the hardtop.
Agreed they wanted way too much to trade. Thanks for sharing your impressions. I've thought of trading from my 1980 911SC Into a Cayman , but a Boxster with a hardtop migh do the trick. Certianly more affordable. Cheers Richard |

Meridian metallic. It was pearl purplish silver if possible.

First problem was that you considered trading in. Sell it yourself to get way more money. The 996 and 986 are pretty similar in experience and share a lot of parts, different experience but it’s hard to really say better/worse.

Seems like a pointless waste of $16k.
Sounds like a "bored" transaction.

Yup, neither better or worse. Different yes.
Agree, certainly better to sell for financial purposes. Not sure what a bored transaction but I wasn't bored trying another porsche. |

Back in the day, even though the 944 was less than a 911 you could still find things to like better about the 944. Different, but not necessarily better or worse. Pretty much all Porsches have been good cars, you just have to find your flavor.

Most times, you can drop the price considerably on the car for sale if you have cash in hand. Where they make most of their money is from giving next to nothing on trade ins.
My FIL wanted to trade in a 99 Chrysler Town and Country (15 years ago), and the dealership allowed him $3000 trade on a car that they wouldn't lower the price a dime. I offered $3000, and bought the van from him, he then went back into the dealership and got the new car for $4000 less. He would have given them the van + $1000 if he did the trade. |

I guess there are a couple good reasons to trade. Sales tax and not having to deal with buyers. Agree, need to find the proper flavor. God I loved the cup holders that 911 had so much. Thanks for the input guys.

Let me say up front I am heavily biased towards the Boxster/Cayman mid engine cars . Having said that I am not surprised by your driving experience . Comparing a 250 hp Boxster to a 300 hp 911 you would think the extra 50 hp would make a big difference , but you have to remember in the 911 you are also dealing with more weight . I think that is why you were not WOWED by the experience . The 996 is a very good if not great GT car but drive both up and down twisty mountain roads and you really appreciate the mid engined cars . To me it is night and day difference . Even if you need the extra seats that trade difference is too great in my opinion .
My Boxster is a 911 killer but look at the engine I'm running ![]()

So true, funny.
Now If I can get the price down to 15k I will do it. My box is has the H&R lowering springs, HD bilsteins, BM short shift, etc so the ride is much different. I think a younger Dave likes the boxster sporty feel, the current Dave sort of likes the comfy ride of the 996 and the cup holders. The 996 is faster, it just hides it better. |

Laughing!! I recently drove a 996 and came away very impressed and it was a dog tired, very neglected one with a 175k, much less one with only 32K

The picture of the 996 looks so boring, so bland, like many cars today. I'd keep my 16k and keep looking. That's the problem I have looking at some early 996's, they look all the same. I would need a turbo body kit, some 19's, and some color.

I can't tell if you're joking about the cupholder thing. I assume you know about these: https://www.ultimatecupholders.com/

Too big to fail
|
A budddy of mine bought a '03 996 cab for $16k yesterday. 80k, with almost $10k of engine and clutch work just 300 miles prior, and $1600 in tires ~2000 miles ago.

I'm sure 996's are really, really great cars but of all the 911s, well...
