Pilots And Nons .....A great landing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B229-KLudTo

Maggie is on a student pilot solo flight and looses a wheel on take off. 13 minutes in length.

As an CFI myself, she did an amazing job.....I think her instructor should have told her to tighten her seat belt and harness along with having her secure the master switch and turn off the fuel immediately upon stopping.

This one will make you feel good.

I remember reading about that a while back, but hadn't heard the ATC. Kudos to all involved.
That's a pretty substantial "charlie foxtrot" for any pilot, let alone a 17yo student on her first XC solo. Bravo Zulu Maggie!

At first, Maggie sounded a bit freaked out when she learned the wheel fell off. But.... she kept her cool and did an outstanding job. I bet everyone involved celebrated after all was done, and then her instructor signed off her solo flight.

But... someone in maintenance probably got a talking to.

What a courageous young women! She should be proud. And the instructors and tower were fantastic. I know nothing about flying but this was an incredible interaction of humans working together.

Very cool. Thanks for posting that.

Her first solo, in-flight emergency and an emergency landing!

You could tell she was pretty freaked out at first but then calmed down and kept her cool. Very well done!

My heart was in my throat during that video. The TV report said it was her FIRST solo! What a way to start. Congratulations!

Yes, initially they mentioned she was bound for an airport in Maine, then later said it was her first solo. I think they got it right the first time. First solo X country.

It was her first solo cross country. This means she probably had 10-20 solo flights.

I remember my first in-flight emergency like it was yesterday. I probably had just under 1000 hours as a pilot at that time.

What she did very well was aviate, navigate and communicate once she was made aware of her emergency. Those three bricks are the foundation of a successful recovery.

A little nerves in her voice? At 17, I hope I would do as well!

Just curious - what was your in-flight emergency?

I'll start another thread soon. This Young Lady deserves the spot light undisturbed by formerly flying dinosaurs!

Very impressive young lady.
I can only imagine the outcome would have been a whole lot different if WACA(?) hadn't noticed the wheel on the ground.

I can remember my first solo... I would have crashed and burned. Glad she was cooler than I could have been.

No doubt she did great, especially for a first timer.

My question is how in the hell did the wheel just fall off? Mr. Obvious will tell you "that ain't supposed to happen!" It would be interesting to see the FAA investigation report to see if they can pinpoint the cause of the wheel just falling off. I know a routine pre-flight check does not include a torque setting for the landing gear bolts, but how did it fail to the point of separating from the aircraft? I presume some mechanic failed to do their job, and she was lucky enough to walk away with no injuries through her skills as a pilot.
