https://nypost.com/2019/01/04/investigation-launched-after-patient-in-vegetative-state-gives-birth/

Quote:
A woman who has been in a vegetative state since she nearly drowned 10 years ago reportedly gave birth to a baby last month, prompting a sex abuse investigation at the Phoenix-area nursing facility, AZ Family reported.

The baby was born on Dec. 29 and is doing well, according to the report. The woman is reportedly a patient at Hacienda HealthCare in Phoenix.

A source familiar with the situation told AZ Family that “none of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth.”

“From what I’ve been told she was moaning. And they didn’t know what was wrong with her,” the source said.

The source told AZ Family that the patient required constant care and that many people had access to her room.

The facility has reportedly changed protocol after the Dec. 29 birth. Male staff needing to enter a female room are required to bring a female employee with them, the source said.

A Hacienda HealthCare nurse declined Fox News’ request for comment because it would be a HIPPA violation and referred questions to the CEO of the nursing facility. The Phoenix Police Department did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Hacienda issued a statement to AZ Family saying it has been in business in the valley for over 50 years and “has an outstanding reputation providing high-quality specialized care for our patients.”

“As a Healthcare provider, we cannot comment on any patient due to Federal and State privacy laws. Additionally, we cannot comment on any ongoing investigations. We can say that our patients and clients health and safety is our #1 priority and that we always cooperate, when asked by any agency, in an open and transparent way.”

Authorities are investigating the facility for possible sex abuse, AZ Family reported. No further details were released.

Glad to hear the protocol changed. Time for a bit of DNA testing?

Good idea. Say to all male staff "DNA testing of everyone on Monday." Then test the guy who doesn't come to work that day.

Now waitasec while I get me a turkey baster...

As weird as times are nowadays, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if it is found out that a woman artificially inseminated the patient for whatever reason.

I don’t think you can just willy-nilly do DNA analysis on all the male employees just because they are male, anyway.

If they find rocks in there too, I think I can point them to a suspect...

This is just getting worse and worse...

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bill-timmons-hacienda-healthcare-ceo-nursing-facility-vegetative-woman-gave-birth-resigns/

Quote:
Hacienda has been under intense scrutiny since the 29-year-old Native American woman had the healthy baby boy December 29, the station said. The patient has been in a vegetative state for 14 years, since a near-drowning incident, KPHO noted.

In a statement, Hacienda said Board Executive Vice President Gary Orman vowed that Hacienda "will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation, an unprecedented case that has devastated everyone involved, from the victim and her family to Hacienda staff at every level of our organization."

Orman said in the statement that Hacienda "will continue to cooperate with Phoenix Police and the investigating agencies at all levels in every way possible."

The station said it's learned that she was raped several times.

KPHO also spoke with a former Hacienda manager who said Timmons insisted that a 1988 incident of abuse of a different patient be covered up.

So, I would have a problem if they just collected DNA from every male that worked at the facility. But if they narrowed it down to a suspect and got a warrant for just that person, I think that is okay. The article doesn't say which was the case, but it sounds more like the second.

https://www.foxnews.com/us/nurse-arrested-in-rape-of-woman-in-vegetative-state-who-gave-birth-at-care-facility

Quote:
A licensed practical nurse who was supposed to care for a woman in a vegetative state at a long-term Arizona nursing facility was arrested after she gave birth to a baby last month, officials announced Wednesday.

Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said at a news conference that 36-year-old Nathan Sutherland was arrested and will be charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse for the incident at the Hacienda Healthcare facility in Phoenix.

"We have worked virtually nonstop every day, every night to resolve this case," Williams told reporters, adding that the crime was "beyond reproach."

Sutherland invoked his Fifth Amendment rights after his arrest and did not give an interview to authorities regarding the case, according to police.

The chief said that officers used "good old-fashioned police work" in addition to DNA tests on the baby to find a match and made the arrest. Sutherland had worked at the facility since 2011, officials added.

"We owed this arrest fo the victim, we owed this arrest of the newest member of our community, that innocent baby," Williams said.

The 29-year-old victim has been incapacitated since the age of 3 and gave birth to a boy at the facility on Dec. 29. Employees at the time said they had no idea she was pregnant. Court records say her last known physical was in April.

"We may not know how many times this occurred," Phoenix police spokesman Tommy Thompson told reporters. Investigators had obtained a court order to collect DNA from Sutherland, which was compared to DNA from the baby boy.

Thompson added that when the assault took place, Sutherland was responsible for the woman.

"This was an employee, rather than a stranger who made his way into the facility," he said.

The baby boy is "doing well," according to Thompson, who added that it's the community's job to protect the child.

"We can't choose how we come into this world," he told reporters.

As her guardian, the woman's mother was required to submit an annual report to the court that included results of a medical exam.

The woman's parents on Tuesday through their attorney disputed characterizations that their daughter is comatose, according to the Associated Press. They described her as being intellectually disabled because of seizures in early childhood. While she doesn't speak, she has some mobility in her limbs, head and neck. She also responds to sound and can make facial gestures.

I know this may be "grammar police", but this sentence is Horrible!

So, apparently, the LPN is a woman and gave birth to a baby.
