PNW deer carcass - what did this?
My sister came across this carcass while walking her dog behind her house in Redmond, OR. I would think coyotes would leave a bigger mess? The skin and head were removed entirely and are laying in the background.

Could be a hunter dumped the carcass after he kept the hind quarters and the back strap tenderloin. I have seen this before.

i bet this is it..altho that one leg pictured gives me pause. removing the forearms is an early move for me, when i am butchering a deer. that's gone into the weed almost right away.

You will have to look at the teeth marks on the bone to know for sure. Foxes and coyotes will strip an animal to the bone in no time at all. A big cat could have done it, but it could also have been done by smaller animals.

If the skin and head are there, I would say that was skinned right there. The best parts taken home and the rest left for the coyotes to find.
Or: I can't really tell from the picture, but is that a paw or a hoof? That leg doesn't scream deer to me.

There aren't any animals besides humans that would remove the skin and the head, right?

I'll add, when I field dressed my deer this last Nov I went back the next morning to check the remains.
If I didn't know what had been there I would have never known something was there. The area was so clean!

Coyotes and birds could easily get a carcass that clean in a day. Head being gone makes is very likely is was downed by a hunter.

Someone jokingly suggested a squatch... An Ape would have left a spiral break in the leg bones from twisting them to quickly disable the animal.

NOT hunting season here. I suspect a poacher at work. In Oregon, game cops are State Police. I'd be calling the state cops. Then they'd be nosing around the area for people using spotlights at night. The usual poaching technique.

Here is a closer look at the bones and ribs, they surely looked gnawed on.
![]() here's the skin and remainder of the limbs ![]() she found this less than one mile from her house in Eagle Crest, no gut pile or anything else was found.

Buzzards, coyotes, and other critters performing clean-up. But still smells of poacher to me. Seriously, she should call the Oregon State Police...they will investigate.
RIP, Lee York, our local area game cop. Diligent? One time, my buddy David & I went to a place he knew, a small creek you couldn't reach without 4x4 or hiking up a steep hill for miles. A salmon spawning place. A log across the creek where the spawning gravel bed was. I was on the log with my polarizing filer attached SLR, trying to get shots. Once we got back to the 4X4, about 100 yards of brush busting, we found a note tucked under a wiper. It read: "Hope you got good pictures. Lee". Neither of us had a clue he was there...
