Glen Plake....never heard of him till today.
"I was plowing roads today (got around 8"s) and as i'm driving past our local ski area i notice a camper all painted up fancy and that name on the side of it parked at the tow.
My wife works there (all volunteer help) and said it's the guy with the mohawk hair cut. So i googled him. I do remember seeing him before. World famous skier at our dinky little ski area is pretty cool. No advanced notice....he (and his wife) just showed up. Found this story about them touring small ski areas https://www.snewsnet.com/press-release/glen-plake-brings-back-the-down-home-tour-to-small-ski-areas-in-the-us

Glen Plake is one of the original "extreme skiers" a la Scott Schmidt, Doug Coombs etc... He's been on a small, local, mom & pop ski area tour for what seems like many years now - one of my ski bum heroes for sure! He's had the 'hawk for as long as I can remember.

Glen Plake is a certified badass. He was winning mogul competitions on 205 GS boards back in the day. My favorite skier of all-time.
Blizzard of Ahhs is a masterpiece

Funny, that’s what I still ski on, and I can still shred the moguls, just a third of the hill at a time though.

Mr Plake can certainly rip. Such a predecessor of today's balls-out lines. Before him was Warren miler and crew pecking their way down a big pitch.

Spent several years skiing Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton with Greg Stump, during my high school/college years. He got into film later, after winning several freestyle championships. Fun times, and fond memories.

Plake is a great guy. Had the pleasure of being in an interview with him.

Very cool Bruce. While I can appreciate Warren Miller and saw most of his movies, Greg took it to the next level and made Miller's stuff look antiquated, at best.

Me too. Loved watching Plake ski. I think a friend of mine and I saw him at Ajax years ago. Memory's a bit foggy from then....
Agree on Warren Miller. Watched all of his stuff over and over, but Greg Stump's films took it a step further no doubt.

As famous for his Mohawk as he was for his skiing.

Back when I still lived in Alabama I was on a photoshoot assignment in Anniston, AL and the reporter I met up with was interviewing some guy that was traveling the world and trying to ski at all the ski resorts in the USA. He had done most of the free parts of Europe. He goal was to ski on all of them and get a patch from every one. He was in Alabama to ski the little Cloudmont Ski & Golf Resort. Not much of a challenge for a experienced skier, but one more patch. And he even mentioned most folks had no idea there was a ski slope in Alabama. He loved little obscure ski resorts.
He said in the interview he was at some big resort in Italy and saw the patch for the Alabama resort on some big time skier, and asked about it. They struck up a friendship and friendly competition to ski all the resorts of the world. Tough job, but someone had to do it.

I was a little surprised when I stumbled over Truck Night In America, and he was one of the hosts.
