NICE WOOD!

25-20 brass is getting harder to find ($$$). I have 25-20 dies, bullets, and brass if you don't have any on hand and want to shoot that beauty.. I like the 86 gr Rem JFN with 8 gr A2400.

Well now it is time to find a pair or even trio of Unertl scopes. I did not like the idea of pulling the scope to remove one of my muzzle loader barrels as my mentor told me as long as barrel/scope are the same then the barrel will shoot the same. I searched for a year before I found one under a thousand dollars! I finally found it at a pawn shop in Arkansas for $600, 12 power.

That is a pretty nice piece of hi grade Walnut for the stock and fore end. On one of the rifles I built I made a Schnabel tip and it was a bugger! Post some pictures please once the scope is one and you are shooting it?

Heresy!!! Black powder and cast bullets are the only way to go in the .25-20 SS. Remember the immortal words of Steve Garbe- "smokeless powder is a passing fad!".

As luck would have it, Terry Wieland has a great article in this month's Handloader magazine covering reloading the .25-20 SS. He sourced brass from Hayley's Custom Ammunition in Texas (and no, Bob Hayley does not have a website or email address - you have to call or write him the old fashioned way). He makes it from readily available .223 brass by rotary swaging it into shape. It is a lot thicker, and therefor has a lot less capacity than does Bertram, so you smokeless shooters need to be careful if you switch to it.

Oh, and very pretty rifle, Tabby. They do a good job on those and they shoot quite well. Modern, tightly controlled barrel and chamber dimensions help a lot. Especially if shooting jacketed bullets of standard diameter over smokeless powder. Cast bullets over black allow for greater flexibility when dealing with old rifles with varying dimensions. But, you don't have that problem.
