Anyone Excited About the *NEW* Toyota Supra
I used to be a huge Toyota fan but that all died when their focus changed to Tundras, Sienna mini vans and Camrys....but finally (and its taken over 20 years!!), I am excited about the new Supra:

It will come down to the dynamics of the car for me, the sound, the movement.
The demand must surely be there given that second hand supra's are selling at similar price points to brand new luxury cars.

After poking around looking at pictures and videos I'll still reserve final judgement, but the styling just does not seem to do it for me.
If the price point is similar to a new C7 Corvette I'd like go that route instead.

For yet another front engine sports coupe, meh. It looks like a copy of the Austin Martins and Jags, and at least the front grill is not the look of the Predator monster. If I was in that market, I would look at the Corvette. Hard to imagine a better price per dollar value of the Vette.
With that said, I am as likely to by a Vette or Toyota as I am to get a facial tattoo. If I am going to spend money on a new car, which is dang unlikely, it would be a new Cayman.

It was engineered and built by BMW and nearly identical to the Z4 underneath. It’s not a super car but it’s faster than a GT86, so I’m not sure where it fits. It certainly isn’t anything like the monster that the original Supra was. Personally I’m pretty meh about it.

My first impression is not a bad looking car but also just a Japanese Z4 . I'm sure it will sell well and hard to beat Toyota quality . I am not nor will be in the market for a new car I'll keep my lowly sleeper Boxster

There's some things I like about the styling but it has have a dozen badly done details that kill my interest. Not a fan of the dash, or the steering wheel. The interior I have seen has different colors for the left and right door panels. Tell me they aren't going to do something that stupid... Not pleased to learn that it's based on a Z4, the last one of which I hated when I drove it. I wouldn't drive a modern BMW if you gave me a free one, so that's probably the ultimate deal killer for me. I respect Toyota now more than I do BMW and why they didn't design their own car and use one of their own engines is a mystery. If I was going to waste $50k on a car, I'd buy a used car. Boxster, Cayman, 911, etc. |

It’s built and designed by BMW. Styled by Toyota. So it will be unreliable and not very attractive.

JR I wasn’t implying that the original Supra was pretty, more that in the context of the 1990s it was a super car. Also like most Toyotas of the era it was bulletproof.

The reason Toyota didn't design their own engine, is Toyota doesn't have an I-6. It would put the cost of a one off engine design just for this car. That engine would have to meet all the different world specs and regulations. $$$
Toyota didn't have the right engine in their line up, hence the BMW partnership.

They always had a bigger engine and a longer front end than the Celica.

This reminds me of Acura and the new NSX. They put the name on a car that really doesn’t have anything in common with the spirit of the original and nobody is buying them.

My mistake, I didn't know they had a larger engine even in the 70s.

No, the chassis was updated with an inline six; the wheel base was longer than the base Celica.
Front body work was also changed to accommodate the longer engine and wheel base. To some extent if they built a flat six Toyota GT it would be more inline with the original Supra.
