-10º f

That is the current projected HIGH for Wednesday!

Low is projected to be -22º F, and wind chill is projected to be around -60º with 20 mph sustained winds. This is the kind of weather where any exposed skin burns immediately.

Stay safe out there!

Mildly cool.

Live in Gunnison for a while, although it's been warmer there lately. Must be global warming.

I love that cold, when dressed appropriately. All the sparkles in the air, the snapping and cracking noises your house can make, the cold pushing in about 12" from the inside wall... Nothing works right in your vehicle, or anywhere. Parts breaking, just because you touch them..

On the other hand, I would suggest engine block heater, a couple blankets in the car... just in case. Be sure there's no cats under the hood when you start the car...

There will be deaths, unfortunately.

I was in -3 degrees F once. It was on a ski slope on Colorado.
I immediately went inside where it was warm and the next day I got on an airplane and flew to where it was warm outside.
Then I felt better.

Sadly, some will not survive this cold span.

The wind with the cold temps is what makes it so dangerous.
Any power outage, because of falling tree limbs, can lead to disaster.
Many rely on electricity alone for heating their homes.

A few years ago we were deer hunting and in the wee hours it was -15*. As much as I like to hunt I am not doing that again.

Funny thing is, on the news last night for the Madison area we had 5-12" of snow and now the frigid cold Legion is talking about and the rain on the weekend.

I remember quite a few days climbing onto the school bus with temps in the -5 to -15 degree range in upstate NY , when your a$$ hit that vinyl seat the vinyl would crunch ! I moved to the south over 27 years ago and I will NEVER be in those temps again For those of you that have this cold snap coming be safe out there .

I went ot use the snow blower this morning and the governor was frozen. THAT sucked. It is in the heated garage now to warm up instead of the detached garage.

I watched the sunset at the beach yesterday. It was 67 degrees. Not bad for NorCal. I actually have to go through a thought process when I wonder what season it is. Let's see.... it's January, so I guess it's winter.

True story: the wife and I were newly married and living in our first home a Schultz single wide mobile home . It was heavily insulated ......... I think 1/2 " in the walls and maybe 3/4 " in the ceiling . The skirt around the base of the trailer was flimsy thin fiberglass panels . Oil furnace and a wood stove for heat . One of the nastiest winter cold snaps in ages hit and even though the copper water feed pipe was insulated AND had an electric heat tape on it AND we let the water slowly come out of several faucets the main feed line froze............ SOLID ! So being young/stupid/broke I crawled under the trailer in the morning and unhooked both ends of the copper line .

Brought the copper line in the trailer and set it on the wood stove to thaw out . From what I remember it took about 2 hours for the entire length ( about 40 ' ) to thaw out . I unwrapped all the insulation , pulled the heat tape off and inspected the copper for any breaks or splits . All was good so I re-installed electric heat tape and insulation , then wrapped with plastic tape and then wrapped with another layer of insulation ! By now I am thawed out as well so time to go back out with this copper javelin and install My memory say's it was still -30 outside and my hands were sooooo cold from holding the wrenches even with gloves . But got it all back together , plugged in the heat tape and was lucky enough it never froze again . We only lived in that trailer for about 2 years and then sold it and bought our first " real " house . I think that was the coldest I had ever been in my life .......... really didn't enjoy it either

I don't know how you guys do it. My arthritis gets bad below 50 degrees. BTW...I just washed my truck in the driveway in shorts, flip flops, and a tee shirt.

I talked to a store owner the other day and he explained what he saw in the news recently about the Polar Vortex.

He said the typical west to east weather pattern flow of the North America was being slowed down because of what's going on in South America where it is hotter than ever in their summer season.

These changes in temperatures means changes in pressure, so when the northern hemisphere air slows down because of what's going on in SA it sort of stalls and gets sucked southward, and that pulls the arctic air rushing in after it.

Not the current weather pattern below, but a nice graphic.

sorry. i didnt mean to sound like "that guy".

i'm just shocked..super cold weather, i dont even understand.

say you have a job that requires coat and tie. you wear thermal underwear under the entire outfit? at that temp, you need a facemask. everyone must look like a bank robber, no? is there an etiquette: you remove face mask before entering bank?
i seriously want to visit Fargo, when it gets that arctic blast..there is nothing that replaces experience. just check it out.

Winter of 1995, in Western Massachusetts, there was a two week stretch where it went below 0 every night. And for 5 days straight, it was below -25 each night. I lived in West Stockbridge at the time.

Snow makes the weirdest sound when you walk on it at those temperatures. A squeaking sound, like walking on Styrofoam.

I think that same winter, Ex-Mrs Beard and I took my parents out to dinner when it was about -5, in South Lee (The Federal House). I remember giving my mother toe heaters for her high heeled shoes.
