That is cool. (err..wait)

A simpler thing but looks messy..there are also heating lines used with pipe wrap foam:

Or those professional dudes with the spiffy infrared cameras.

Dude how about a super rugged cell phone,
with infrared camera,
laser that measures 33 feet away,
built in VOC sampler that can detect air quality every 30 seconds,
costing about the same as a high end Apple?

This. WAY simpler than anything mentioned here for small trouble spots. Wrap the pipe with heat tape, insulate it, plug it in. Done.

Kind of the same in North Canton. I am shivering a touch as my computer is up against a drafty wall. 50F on the thermometer in this area. Fixin' to head home.

Well... I won... sorta. Got the line thawed, turned the water and, and wouldn't ya know it the damn handle for the cpvc shutoff leaks!!
So back off with the water, out with the line, blow the water out of the lines back into the tub and sink, and off to the store tomorrow for a new shutoff.

BTW I'd go with the heat tape but it would require cutting the floor, installing and putting new floor down. The problem with heat tape is, it fails. At some point I'll take the floor up and get a good permanent fix.. for now I'm just happy the line is still intact and functional.

But you got to flush and refill the toilet? That's a win!

My brother paid $400 for a guy to come in about eight years ago and do the look/see business.

This tool is a bargain.

I have never, ever just once run off to the store for anything plumbing. Three trips minimum if you include opening the box at home to find out what’s in it isn’t what’s supposed to be in it.

Survived day one. Its -6 right now. It is pretty hard to keep the shop in the 50's in weather like this. I had it up to 60 for a spell, but the furnace never shut off .
I wear long johns, 2 pars of socks, and 2 heavy shirts .
The coffee that I left on my work bench last nite, was frozen solid when I got in this am.
I have heat tape on most of my pipes, and have not had a rupture in the last few years.
I have lost a few air lines in this weather before but so far, so good .
I drag the torpedo heater around to take the chill off when I need to . If I can make it through tomorrow, I think we are warming up Friday .

I rarely buy just one item. I'll grab two or three typically when it comes to plumbing stuff. If it wasn't for me wanting to "update" the shutoff to a different style, I have a standard CPVC shutoff here. But that's too easy!

In that pic above of the frozen bowl, it has one of the new valves that you can't "drip" without using something to force the flapper to leak. The old rod with a float type could be made to run slowly by just tightening or loosening the screw that closed the valve. Damn water savers!

It was so cold in Wisconsin yesterday (-33º F in places) that they closed the bars.

You heard me correctly. THEY CLOSED THE BARS IN WISCONSIN YESTERDAY.

john70t 01-31-2019 07:56 AM

It was -15degrees last night (-40 w/wind chill). Thursday.
Me and dog walked one quick block and I was done.

It's supposed to be 53deg on Monday.
