Thinking Whirlpool tub ....
Bathroom remodel time so I'm thinking Whirlpool type tub. I see some advertised with a small hot water booster. Are these needed or a gimmick? What else should I look out for?

I am removing mine soon as it never gets used and is over 25 years old.
If they are big enough to get right in they might be ok but mine was a 5 foot tub and parts of you are either in or out. Going back to a soaker to keep it simple. If they have a large amount of water in them, the additional heater can be a good thing to keep the temperature up. If you have a tankless water heater I wouldn't worry about getting the optional heater. I think that most whirlpool tubs don't really get used as often as the people who bought them thought they would.

The previous owner of my house put one in and it is small. I've never used it. My hot tub, I use that a lot!

I haven't installed one in years. Not even in 'higher end' homes. No more tub decks either. Buyers want free-standing soaking tubs.

My parents put one in their home 20 years ago when they built the house.. I don't believe either has ever used it.

We have a whirlpool tub in our master bathroom. In the 20+ years we have lived here, I have never used it even once. My wife has on four or five occasions.

![]() This was in our home when we bought it. It's heated with 8 or so jets, but it's only 50x50x48 - not big enough for a normal human. The triangular shape is a total waste of water. Dumb idea.

We have an angled one, similar to above. 95% I take a shower, unless I've done something that needs a soak (pulled muscle or cramp).
When we remodel the bathroom, that tub is gone. We will install a floor to ceiling shower unit and I plan to put in a steam generator (clearing allergies). Where the shower is now will get a standard rectangular tub, but it will be jetted. If we re-sell for some reason, the tub will need to be a jetted tub, since all masters in our area have a jetted tub. No going to spend a lot for it...

Luckily ours is big enough that it is also a shower and you don't need a curtain. It does look nice though.

Don't do it!
Consider an enclosed shower with steam. Awesome and you'll use it much more.

Similar experience here. I might have used it 3 times in ~10 yrs. Took forever to fill up, ran out of hot water and then a pain to clean. If you really want one I would get a bigger water heater unless a smaller local heater is simple. Big shower with a hand shower is really nice. Heated floor is a nice upgrade.

We had a large one in our last house. Even had a television at the foot of the tub and stereo speakers in the ceiling above it. My better half used it a number of times the first year or so but not much after that. If you must have one, I would say yes to the additional water heater. We had a large water heater that was used only for our master bathroom and we would run out of hot water before the tub was filled. If you are thinking of selling your house in the next few years, maybe it would be worth it to market your house. Other than that, I would say, no...

I installed a decent sized tub with jets and bubbles about ten years ago, mostly for my wife since I don't care about a tub. At the time I also thought it was necessary for resale some time in the future. She has used it probably less than ten times in ten years, although she really likes it when she uses it. The bathroom is something like 13 ft. square so there is enough room to accommodate it. Otherwise it's mostly unused space.

Our house came with one. It is handy if you have sore muscles but we have used it half a dozen times in the last 10 years between all of us.
