Tesla Solar Roof

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-05-10/tesla-s-solar-roof-is-finally-ready-for-you-to-buy

The pricing for Tesla's solar roof is being hailed as much lower than expected. However, when I plug my address into the estimator https://www.tesla.com/solarroof it still looks like solar on my roof is a financial loser.

"$12,300

Net cost over 30 years"

I've periodically checked the numbers over the past ten years, and I've never found that it makes financial sense for me.

But then again, I live in Portland Oregon where there is relatively less sunshine and electricity rates are low (about $0.11 kwH).

How about some of you in sunnier or higher-electricity-price areas? Plug your address in and let's see if anyone gets a net cost that is negative (i.e. a net gain).

$3600 in cost for me.
2700 SqFt 2 Story Minneapolis

Not sure I'll be around for 30 more years though.
Maybe the cost will come down by the time I actually need a new roof.

I get a $4900 net over 30 years, but I still have several questions. My peak runs north-south roughly, so the two sloping faces face east and west. I bet that would reduce the amount of electricity generated, compared to south facing. Also, being in Anchorage, snow would cover the panels for a portion of the year. On the other hand, the tiles look slick, even the textured ones, that would allow the snow to slide off more easily (like a metal roof), and I would have to plan for that. You don't want large amounts of snow sliding off on to cars or people. Even if the snow slid off and didn't damage anything, there would still be frost covering a portion of the tiles, preventing sunlight from hitting the cells. The website is not meant to be a detailed estimate, but details must be considered.

No calculator for Canadians.

I think it's an awesome idea, I know ours would pay for itself easy. Just imagine and entire city using it. In one video musk has, if there was a farm the size of the tip of Texas it could power the US (but it doesn't talk about storage or cloudy days)

Love to be energy independant

Solar city's new model is to send people door to door. By plugging in your address, expect a visit.

We can't keep asphalt roads in repair. What happens when they cost $20 per square foot?

I propose special lanes for newer, light vehicles. The trucks can hammer the old concrete and asphalt lanes.

$171,600 for the Roof and Solar equipment???

and $23,500 for Tesla batteries?

Huh????

A Mi-Grid 4000 with 20kW of Solar which INCLUDES the batteries AND a backup generator, installed in Houston is ~$100K. Tax Credit would be $30K.

It would generate $125,000 in electricity over 30 years

Wow. These guys are blowing some MAJOR smoke.

And all I have to do to get started is put down a $1000 deposit. For a product that will be available when? And a lifetime guarantee (to infinity!) for a company of questionable financial solvency.

How big is your roof James? It's saying ours would only be about 90k, and we have a fairly large home.

It shows us at 31k positive over 30 years but I don't know if that takes into account our power companies grid maintenance that makes solar essentially pointless.

See the picture above 5248 sq feet.

The issue is the cost is WAY high for 20kW of solar. A standard grid tied system would be ~$50-60K

If you are $30K positive in 30 years, for a $90K system, then the initial payback time is ~20 years.

your $90K system is probably 10kW. That should cost no more than $30K to install.

LOL!
I love the sequence where they show a big ass bit of hail smashing the traditional Roof-tiles and not damaging the Tesla one. Why is it mounted to the test-stage in a different way?

We did not buy solarpanels when bulding the house 12 years ago because they are f*cking ugly! At that time the promotion by the state was gigantic, now not so much anymore.
The Tesla ones look very nice at least.
