I need a new job
I'm clearly not making enough money...
And I need to make a new friend here in Houston

I wouldn't like the stress of obsessing over every detail, and worrying about every stone chip. I would like to have a dedicated 5 car garage, but nothing in the living room/kitchen.

I seriously considered keeping my Speedster in the house. I had double front doors picked out that would have let me drive it in. I didn't get around to doing it, and then I got married ....

I have wanted to do that since I saw it on Dan Tanna.
On two other notes; 1. I hope AOC doesn't see this video, food for her 90% tax plan. Clearly by her standard he has too much money. He parks his cars in the living room. In the video he stated he had two McLaren's, a Ford GT, a Porsche of some sort a Ferrari especialle 2. While I do like the car I do not like the Gulf colors on it. |

It is hard to imagine owning a million dollar car. On the other hand, it is relatively hard to imagine buying a $100K car for me...although I could.
I was just talking to my much younger brother (giving amateur financial advice...LOL)….since he is in his mid 40's and has no retirement saving/plan other than social security...and pretty much spends everything he earns. I was advising based on an assumed 24% ($165-$315K) tax bracket (trying to explain how to stay out of the next one 32% ($315-400K). Turned out that he was not even in the 35% bracket...but was in the $37% ($600,001 or more)...and has made that much for much of his working life. His housing and cars are not that different than mine (does not live in a high-cost city like NY or LA)...so I said, "I cannot even imagine that I could spend that much each year if I tried." He said, "I cannot imagine being able to live on a penny less." I always felt bad that I made much less than my older brother (lawyer) who was making over a $mil years ago (in DC)...but did not expect the same for my younger brother (engineer) who really seems not to be a real go-getter. We are all from a very poor family (rural Appalachia)..think Beverly Hillbillies before they struck oil. I was to the point where I felt like my wife and I were doing well financially. Now I feel like a total loser (financially). I have worked in the public sector where salaries are capped. It seems to me that maybe I have chosen poorly...and need to find a new job/career as well (but am probably too old now). When did people start making salaries like this?

This would not work in a wet northern climate, and who wants exhaust fumes in their house making it smell like a garage?
Cool idea, been done before, obviously not for everyone. 1950's Living Garage https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1950s-living-garage.474318/ ![]() ![]() Yea, the TV show "Vegas" made it look appealing.

Maybe no coincidence there isn't a wife anywhere in the background?
Cool idea but execution could be better - i.e. access, lighting, ceiling height etc. I doubt that's up to code. If the car burns, your living area is immediately on fire. Where do you even drive a McLaren in Houston? Are there any public roads with turns in a 500 mile radius? I feel blessed with great driving roads right outside of town and several tracks couple hours away in every direction that are some of the best in the country. I do miss LA for better public driving roads - the San Gabriel Mountains were in my backyard there ... I still like this garage best! ![]() G |

You wouldn't want to store your daily driver in the house for sure. Here in the cold, soggy midwest we put our collector cars up for the winter. In my case the car would have been in the living room from December through March, and in the garage the rest of the year. The biggest problem would be the gas and oil fumes. The whole fuel system would have to be drained. The transmission would need a thorough cleaning, too.

Lots of nicer ways to do this.

I put a couple of common patio door sliders in a wall of a garage for a guy to look at his car. The main overhead door stayed for access.
He wasn't married...at the time. Did a whole MCM interior reno for him too. Then he got married and moved to suburbia. The car was a Lamborghini Jarama 400 GTS, IIRC. |

no thanks.
i think a better execution would be a bad ass architectural glass panel wall between a living quarters and a garage. like what Tony Stark had.

Well, at least he used the correct pronunciation on one of cars he said was in his home the night before.

Ha! That's my neighbor here in Houston, he copied me when I brought my old Datsun into the house to fix the clutch during Hurricane Harvey.

OK, yeah, for a guy with a million dollar car, having to pull in and park the way he does is silly and poorly done. I'm not sure I care. Maybe when I'm hanging with him later, I'll rib him about his crappy garage.

Buddy of mine constructed a pole barn with a living area and a shop separated by a high-end roll-up door (pretty side facing the living room). He said when the door is closed you can’t tell it’s a door.
I haven’t been there but that seemed like a cool idea. |
