I need a new job

I'm ambivalent about the whole video except for the cute reporter.

Absolutely nothing about the guy, his family or his lifestyle as shown by the vid is anything that appeals to me.

Not to say I wouldn't mind having his apparent income, but my tastes (would) lean more towards the Ralph Lauren approach if money could be taken out of the equation.

It seems to me that maybe I have chosen poorly...and need to find a new job/career as well (but am probably too old now). When did people start making salaries like this?

I can sympathize. I thought I’d do pretty well as an engineer but then you hear about other salaries and get bummed out. Then I realize I enjoy what I do (most of the time), I work reasonable hours, get a decent salary and I’m not in a position or industry where I feel obliged to live above my means.

With my man cave build I designed in a 2nd floor glass partition wall to display a bright red Ducati, also wanted to have written on the glass 'In Case of Emergency Break Glass'

I don't even ride motor cycles but thought it would make a cool art sculpture, for the installation I would have had to take the bike in pieces up two narrow spiral stair cases

There’s too much in your post re: engineer bro and his “salary” that just doesn’t “add up” for me. No idea what type of engineer he is nor who he works for but 600k+ for years doesn’t pass my smeller. I could be way off and I’m certainly NOT saying either of you are being less than truthful here. Now, IF he owns the co or is SO highly specialized and very few can do what he does, then maybe. Also, I’ve found when I subject myself to the comparative compensatory game with others in my field, or any other, then I can easily spin myself out. I don’t know what you do in the public sector but I’m betting you do it well and we (being in the public) are/should be grateful for people like you. As I’m sure you’re aware, there’s FAR more to life than money. Hope I didn’t overstep my bounds.

That McLaren is hideous. I really don't understand why anybody would drive around in something as "loud" as that.

A car indoors? Why not? I've always thought a garage themed home would be cool.

That car on the wall looks like it would be a biotch to dust. Could be a problem in an earthquake, too.

As for parking in the living room, it looks stupid in this case. I used to envision an industrial space where I could pull my car into the cave but in reality, the exhaust would kind of suck. Better to just have a great garage. That guy doesn't have a good garage or living space w that arrangement.

To each their own of course and it's his money but none of it gives me envy. McLarens are alright but in the garage, not the house.

I think I would find the old grandpa dude quite fascinating and eccentric and dorky as hell. He grows on you after a while because he's just happy. If I was him, I would drive those cars EVERYWHERE every day. He's not going to live long enough to amortize all of his stuff, so screw it, live life to the fullest.

I've studied Tony Stark's man cave at length, haha.. His is subterranean with a circular stair case from the living room and an elevator. I've thought a lot about putting a couch in the shop like that.

One of my friends that lives just a few miles from me has a really nice house, and a better garage. His kitchen is bigger than my entire first house. It does not have an island in the kitchen, it is a continent.
His garage is a separate building in the back the has his 11 cars plus a motor home parked inside. The living room area is nicer than my house and he has a full wet bar with two beers on tap and two large high def TVs.
Oh, and a full wine cellar.

He is s super nice guy. Very knowledgeable about his two 356s and his 993 911 Turbo S and the other Porsche’s.

I am being as candid with as much as I know. I guess lots of folks make that kind of money or we would not see so many supercars on the highway. His education is a BS in mechanical engineering...but he really leads a small team...and generally does sales (salary, not commission). He is considered VP of a small company that was bought by a larger one and tells me that he makes more than the actual President of the small company. I suspect he is considered a "rainmaker" of sorts as he seems able to push high-tech product. Oh...and I assume the $600K+ includes his wife's income which is probably quite good...but still likely close to $300K or more.

Yes, I am considered very good at what I do and have massive responsibility and impact the lives of very many people (compared to either of my brother/s)…but in the public sector, one must remember that even the head of an Agency Like DoD, DHS, etc. that are effectively a CEO for tens or even hundreds of thousand of people all over the world only makes $200K or less. I do max out the pay and have other income streams so I do pretty well...just not on earned income alone.

I seem to live as well as my brothers (just a bit more frugally)...other than I do/did not send my kids to fancy private schools or go on fancy vacations, etc...or have a new car every year or two. I actually save about 30% of what I make and have put together a retirement that will provide as much as I made while working (or more)...so I am far better off than most people. Unfortunately, how much one is paid seems the best way to keep score...and I am competitive.

On a positive note, it appears that he pays 12% more in Fed income taxes than I do.

I have to agree...as other than the car...it seemed meager. I guess it is about priorities. Maybe it is like the old joke (that I often saw growing up in the rural south)...about a Cadillac or Corvette (or nice new muscle car) parked out in front of an old mobile home (in the 60s and 70s).
