This Tech Makes D.I.Y. Key Duplication Easy. Maybe Too Easy.
The kiosks from Key.Me have popped up in a couple of stores around here. It is an interesting use of technology. I really didn't give it much thought until I read this story the other day.
This Tech Makes D.I.Y. Key Duplication Easy. Maybe Too Easy Would you use one of their kiosks or order a duplicate key online? The price is appealing but you are potentially exposing too many details to another party. I went to their website and plugged in a 996. It came back with the link below. They indicate that I just need to go to one of their kiosks where I can insert the key and they will scan it. In 3 to 5 days, they will ship a duplicate key which is fully functional with the exception that only the remote buttons will not work. The cost would be $99. Porsche 996 key This would be another good reason to not leave your keys with a valet. They could run over to the local supermarket and order a duplicate key while you are having dinner. For reference, how much is the usual price for a duplicate 996 key? My wife got a quote for a key for her Dodge for $285/Dealer or $185/Batteries Plus. $99 sounds better yet.

No one needs that service to dupe a key.
Cell phone pic, a blank, and a file are all that’s needed. If you want to get fancy take a couple of pics, run through a photogrammetry suite and send to 3D printer or desktop CNC

A 996 key from the dealer is about $300. Then, it takes about an hour for it to be programmed. So, between $450 to $500 all in.
According the key.me site, theirs is shipped ready to go. I am dubious that it would actually work. Last edited by Paul_Heery; 03-08-2019 at 01:50 PM.. |

My guess is that the key would go into the locks and turn them. I suspect getting the key programmed to your car would be up to you and the dealer.

When Dad locked the keys in the 356, with the car running, local locksmith couldn't use a dlim jim. He picked the drivers door lock. Just for giggles, he then did the transmission lock and ignition too. I've taught others via email how to pick the antenna lock and glove box lock on the 356. For you new fangled guys and gals with your fancy 12v electrical systems and computerized stuff and push-to-start, hacking software or spoofing via replay attacks, etc. work just fine. Hell, I've never had my ID or AAA card checked when calling a tow truck.... Having seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off and read plenty of fark headlines regarding wayward valets and dealership service agents, I gotta wonder... What exactly are you worried about? |

Walmart has a laser cut machine - that's where I had my last 914 key made. I brought my own blank. Under $2.

One of the buttons stopped working on my 2016 Ram pickup. The dealer wanted $250 for the remote and another $65 to program it! I bought a third party off of eBay for $20 and got it programmed for $65 (one dealer wanted $165!).
They cut the key as well, but I didn't want them to do that as they charged $20 for that, but you can get that done for $5 at Home Depot. Is there any way to get the programming done without going to the dealer? They wanted $300 for a new key and programming on my son's jeep.

Bumping an old thread on duplicating 996 keys with the grove up the middle and not a side serrated edge.
Is that a dealer only cut, and then to program? Or can most shops do the middle cut groove? then dealer is a must to program? ![]()

My local key place can cut keys like that, at least for Chevy.
The wife has a flip key, but no push start. So she flips the key out every time she uses the car. Eventually the hinge piece broke and the cut end went somewhere. Of course she was at a store. I drove over with the spare key, and combed the parking lot from where her car was parked to the door, nothing. Asked if anyone had turned anything in, nothing. I had a key blank from when we ordered a replacement head, and took it to the key place. He was sure he was also going to have to reprogram the bcm for the new key, but I told him no, just cut the key. Cost me $20, a lot more than a house key or older car key, but he said that was because the blank for those is steel and harder on the equipment. He just had to take it out to the car to verify it would start. He was sure it wouldn't. But it did, because I put the electronic guts from the broken head in the replacement. My truck is newer than the wife's car, but still has the conventional key and remote. It has a column shift, and the shift lever would hit the key head on a flip key. |

Easier still is sending a picture of your key and having them make a copy....
