Continuing Thread: What Are You Fix-It'ing Today?

This radio belonged to my grandparents and is at the cabin, I think it is a Philco, but I don't remember. I plugged it up once and something popped and the cord was smoldering, lol. I always planned to see what it would take to fix it, but as it sits, it is a display piece. By the way, that is a small glass lamp sitting on top of it and is not part of the radio's design.

You don't plug in old radios that have sat not working for years. If that has a transformer you likely toasted it and it's not worth anything more than something to look at and hold that glass lamp.

Did I always know this? Of course not.

Transformers are hard to find and when you do they are spendy. The value of old radios has plummeted to 10 and 20 dollars for table sets and 50 for nice old consoles unless they are already gone through. And then the cost of having one worked by another exceeds any value. I might say greatly exceeds any value. There are a few exceptions, of course.

We are using my son's Santa Fe to haul the little Snark to the beach. I slid the front cross bar all the way forward and wrapped the crossbars with foam pipe insulation and zip tied into place. I also made some tie down points for the front. Getting there.
Looks like we will be painting his hood in the near future, lol.

Got a panicked text last evening from an elderly lady who lives alone. Her water system wasn't working. I packed up a bunch of stuff I thought I might need and the Missus went up. A quick check revealed the foot valve in her well was stuck. I managed to move it around enough to dislodge whatever was causing the problem. Happy Birthday to her.

Stopped at my mechanics today so he could look at the Silverado's AC. He said it was low on freon but wanted to vacuum it - so he did and then added a couple cans and a half. I added 2 more when I got home and it's nice and frosty again.

He had asked me about getting some more plants for his "patio" - which is really what we in the business refer to as an outside living area. This is right behind his shop - his RV so he can live there. Pretty sweet little setup! So I brought him 5 of my bromeliads I had in stock. I repotted them before bringing them over so he'd be set for a while. He was pretty stoked and so was I!



He's going to build some kind of display stand for them and told me he wants to add another palm or two....

No pics, but I replaced the condensate pumps on my HVAC air handlers today. One died last year, so I figured it was a good idea to replace both.

Haha... that would be cool, if only there were stacks of cash available for retired church folding tables with leftover urethane paint splashed and dribbled all over them.
I dump the excess paint on stuff around the shop rather than letting it harden off in the trash can...

After making an E-waste run this morning to get rid of the cable boxes and some old AAA batteries, I decided to see if I could get my dad's old Craftsman dual action sander going again.
Got it to turn on with a little electrical contact spray cleaner shot down the switch, but all that did was get the motor running.
Took it apart to see what the bunch of rocks in a coffee can sound was being caused by.
Looks like it's toast to me.
What do you think?

To top it all off, I was using his old pocket knife which I've had for a long long time, in a manner in which it wasn't supposed to be used.
I broke the tip off the small blade.
This knife is older than I am as it has a leash on it that I think he wove when he was in the Navy, which was way before my time.
I will get a professional to regrind the tip back onto it.
I'm sorry Dad, I know better than to use a knife in that manner.

That doesn't look like the pressure treated wood I'm used to seeing or using.

I think I'd be staining it and putting a good coat of varnish on it if it were mine.

Love it too! Woke up to some fresh mole tunnels this morning. Don't love that. I put down some insecticide for grubs and worms a couple of weeks ago which usually works to control moles. Guess I need to widen the spread. They came in from the beds.
