Continuing Thread: What Are You Fix-It'ing Today?
 
2024?????

It has been one of those “bug vs windshield” years so far and we are only into May….. I am screwed.

1: 2015 Chevy Volt (commuter car) went to the dealer in January for warranty battery replacement. Thus my secondary vehicle, a 1995 GMC K1500 now becomes my primary daily driver, oh yeah, it has 350K on the clock.

April 13th, I get a call from the dealer informing me I will be lucky to get the Volt back by October due to Lithium supply shortages. A week later the GMC goes down for an unknown issue. After diagnosing it for a week, I replace the following:

-Vacuum line check
-Fuel filter
-IAC module
-TPS module
-EGR valve and sensor
-cap/rotor/ and Ignition module
-MAP Sensor
-rebuilt TBI with two new injectors
-O2 sensor
-new K&N air filter

Truck ran great after the repairs and then went to complete chit 20 minutes into the test drive. So I am still trying to fix my 30 year old truck. Fuel related or a blocked CAT. Doing all this on my days off and using the parents truck.

Parents needed their truck back after letting me borrow it for a week(which I was very appreciative). So there I sat, no way to get to work or anywhere else. Was forced in getting another commuter car to use while my first commuter hybrid/EV sits, rotting at the dealer for ten+ months. [emoji849]

WTF !?!?!?!?!? [emoji1589]EV’s n hybrid battery systems.

You ask, so what is the morel to this tail?

We are headed to the big Li-ion ice-burg if there are supply issues for a 2015, which was just the start of the hybrid/EV push. Imagine what is going to happen when all of today’s EV’s take a chit….. just sayin

Bugs, it sounds like you are having my last December. Everything I fixed broke. I spent Jan and Feb taking things back and redoing them. In Mar the bottom fell out and in April I took in one job. Same thing for May, one job and it didn't go well. I have one job left from Dec that I am waiting on some Weldon-4 acrylic glue which is not for sale any longer in CA. A friend of a friend is mailing it in from out of state.

Put the new front wheel on our tractor this afternoon. We were tilling a field last week. Ground was soft and I steering felt "off" . Turned out the wheel studs had backed out and the holes in the wheel were beaten out. It took a week for the new rim to come in. Had to drive an hour to the dealership to get it and they didn't have enough wheel bolts. Another dealer on the way home did have enough. Now I just have to remember to re-torque the bolts in a day or so.
Expensive lesson.

Aligning the exhaust gaskets on this car is next to impossible. No access. This time I will try hanging them using thread.

That's the least of our worries.....but ya it's all going to chit...

Hey Leaky, why not do what the Road Kill guys do when putting headers on.
Cut the gaskets so they'll hang on the bolts.
Put the manifold on and start the bolts then slip the gaskets in before tightening up the bolts.

I tried to add lines that show how I'd cut the gaskets so they'll hang from the bolts.

Thanks! I just torqued the head and about to attach the exhaust now. If the string fails, I'm going right to clipping!
Edit- I haven't even been done with tightening the head bolts for 10 minutes and already I'm worrying "I remembered to make sure I didn't leave a socket or some bolt in a cylinder before I remounted the head? Right?" :)

For peace of mind these days, I take a picture just before putting something like a head on, just so I have reassuring proof I didn't have a brain fart and forget something.

Yeah, this is the first time the truck has stumped me in 30 years of ownership. I should check the fuel pressure, however to do that, I can only plug in a fitting and tester near my fuel filter. The hard lines leave no wiggle room for the 2” adapter needed for the gauge for the hose.

I replace the original fuel pump in 2015 with one from a local Napa. [emoji2371] To access the pump, I need to either pull the bed or drop the tank. Neither is an easy task.

The work goes on.

I had a FP go bad just going down the street. Yes, I had a load of gas to pump out. People don't realize that running these at a 1/4 tank does not provide the cooling for the pump as 1/2 tank or more will. That can cause the pump to fail.

IDK how to check it w/o a gauge but I bet there's a hack. Seems like you could see some fuel in the TB too unlike port injection. The butterflies should be wet. A little wet anyway. I did have to by new injectors once in 250K+ miles. I owned mine 24 years.

It's been a little while since I updated my column replacement project. Here is how I finished off the column bases.

The columns are 4 x 6 so I took a 2 x 6 and routed out the back side so they fit the over the connector plate and bolt heads. First one took quite awhile to fit tight. The other three went much faster. I used Liquid Nails/screws/caulk/paint. I held them off the ground about an 1/8".

It’s a really strange dealio, it’s like the FP is trying but always assumes a FP either worked or not. Might have a clogged Sox on the pump

I can see fuel spritz in the TBI and I can keep the engine running around 2K rpm. Then it wants to die and idle crappy. [emoji2371]

There are also many nice pre moulded PVC column wraps available for any size post. Paintable with options like fluting and beveled plinth blocks top and bottom.
