Replacing pedestal liners on a railroad car truck. The steel liners are welded to the frame with stainless steel rods. The guy who cut the welds off for us before, used a carbon arc "Torch" but he was unavailable. An oxygen/acetylene cutting torch will not touch the stainless so had to burn the manganese steel liners around the welds to remove them. That left a ton of stainless steel and bits of the liners that remained to be ground off with angle grinders.

The sequel to the other day...lots of super clean, lots of pressure washing, lots of acetone.
The play here was to remove all the oil saturation I could then to layup another lamination of 4 oz glass.
The blue goo is superfill, an epoxy based filler, with micro. It works well to fill the weave of the glass.
Tomorrow a quick sand then high fill catalyzed primer and flexible catalyzed glazing putty, then a seal coat of epoxy and paint.

Something more simple than I remember installed 2 new bike tires and inner tubes in like 10 minutes.
Getting the camper, trailer and race car ready takes a lot longer.
Got a $70 truck cover and sliced the bed area so I can use it with the camper installed.

We finished reassembling the truck after installing refurbished wheel sets, jacked the end of the car up, pulled the shop truck out and rolled the rebuilt truck back under and lowered the car back onto it.


After reattaching the air brake hose, the side bearings had to be adjusted. Me, being the littlest guy in our group, was chosen to squeeze in to the gap between the car body and the truck frame to perform that task.


An explanation of the side bearings. These prevent the car body from rocking from side to side on the trucks when encountering rough track. The suspension in the truck side frames should handle that. The bearings are made up of a composite material, similar to brake pads, bonded to a chunk of steal that has mounting holes at either end to bolt to the truck frame. Normally there is supposed to be a little over 1/16" (1.6mm) clearance. When the truck rotates as the car goes around a curve, the bearing blocks can make contact and slide along under the car. However after unbolting and removing the bearing blocks to clean the rust scale off all the surfaces including the existing shims, the gaps increased considerably. I had to fabricate some new shims, slotted to slide around the retaining bolts, while the blocks were loosely mounted in place then tighten up the bolts again.This image was taken when the car was first jacked up off the truck.

Railroading stuff in general is fascinating. The engineering of many of the systems is very clever, and often 'simple in concept' (for instance the couplers), but obviously invented by mechanical geniuses.

I remember once reading about the interaction between the wheels and the railroad track. There's a hell of a lot more to that than meets the eye. Another simple idea - conical wheels - solving multiple problems: The opposing forces keep the train on the track, and the differing diameters through turns allow for differential action even though the wheels are on a common, solid axle.

There's a video on YouTube that shows the various systems in the BigBoy. Man o man. The linkage of the drivetrain, the engineering of the firebox, the path of the steam and the coal smoke....
All just engineering marvels.

The train stuff is very interesting. Im sure its not easy work with everything being so big and heavy.
Today I changed the cleaning ladys original alternator on her 04 matrix with somewhere over 300k on it. The odo stopped at 299,999 they all do that.

I've got the Procaster apart and cleaned a bunch of the tiny bits and have them all soaking in some Dawn dish soap and water for a little extra cleaning.

My granddaughter was careless enough to push her little lcd desk lamp to the back of her desk hard enough to break the jack. So this afternoon I took the jack and receptacle out of the circuit ( being careful to preserve polarity) and solder the wires together. Function was restored .

Living out here in the country with a 1/4 mile long driveway, it is so odd seeing screens up around scrap piles and the portapotty. Ain't progress wonderful?!
Serious question: will the lawns have to be sodded to meet community standards or can you just seed the area?

All sod and irrigation. This is a gated community and the ARB rules dictate that we have to screen the dumpster and the Porta Jon, so that the senses of the delicate homeowners are not offended. The current homeowners can really be over the top for new construction.

I got the Diawa Procaster PMA 10-S reel all back together today and man, it works great!!! This thing is super smooth. I had to play around with the anti-backlash and spool tension a bit to get the spool spinning how I liked, but once dialed in, oh yeah!!! Now this reel will live on to fish for many years to come.
