Got the DME installed and reworked the cooling system. I’ll start the oil cooler tomorrow, but won’t finish… parts missing 🤬

I'm finally getting around to hanging the drywall in the laundry room. Not worth posting a picture of it. Drywall ain't pretty.

Yeah, but just think of what the inside of your house would look like without it.

Some progress on my project this morning. This stuff looks like the real deal wrt corrosion proofing. Reminds me of both red oxide paint and white silicon roof coating.

I removed the chains, dipped them in the paint, hung them up, and then used a 1" paint brush to coat as much as I could for 4 of the 7 baskets. Then I re-attached the chains and hung all baskets up to allow paint to dry.

It's going to take at least two or three more work sessions to complete this phase of the project - but so far I'm very pleased with how it's going!

Installed and wired the radiator fan. Drilled (4) 3” holes in the front bumper for air flow and mocked up the oil cooler. Then do some test drives, to see if I need to install the oil cooler fan.

21 hp B&S mower was hard starting. Finally twigged to the idea of a bad fuel pump. My guy had them in stock. It took less than 10 minutes to haul the old one off, check the vacuum line and install the new. Started with the first turn of the key. I felt like such a dummy, the thing has been starting hard for a year.

Best

My mountain place outdoor kitchen is getting there. Still have the under sink cabinet and island to build but I'm confident it will hold any snow load. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1661122484.jpg

^^^ That's gorgeous. I need that now! Love the slab countertops.

gregpark 08-21-2022 04:38 PM

Thanks. The slabs are pecky Cedar from a tree I felled on the property. Actually, all of the lumber you see I milled on the band mill. The only lumber I buy is plywood

Looking good, Greg! How's the weather out there right now - for working outside? Looks like you have some nice partial shade from those conifers.....

A930Rocket 08-21-2022 05:56 PM

Finished up the oil cooler install, but I need to swap out some fittings with different angles, so the hoses look/flow better.

Next weekend. Wire the fan relay to a thermostat, hook up the oil pressure sender, get the key fob and door locks working again, find out why windshield wipers are not working….

The weather is great. It almost always is in the summer in the Sierra Nevada range. About 82° today, perfect working weather. I do have some shade from the trees but also have a couple of 11' umbrellas on the deck. The new tinted Poly roofing offers nice shade too.

Excellent work, Greg!

Bill Douglas 08-21-2022 07:54 PM

Good skills Greg. Very stylish.

gregpark 08-22-2022 08:16 AM

Thanks guys. A fair amount of work and not done yet but I love these kind of projects. I'm pleasantly surprised with how well the 12v fridge works, as good as my LG at home. It's made by Sunfrost for solar applications and it makes ice in just a few hours. I have 2 panels and 2 big batteries dedicated to the fridge, the light and my tool battery chargers and I have power to spare. This place is pretty remote with any utilities 10 miles away. I'd be totally off grid except I still use propane for the stoves, water heater and indoor fridge. That's a tough one to eliminate. I have unlimited firewood, wood stove for heat and I could rig an inside the stove radiator for hot water and cook on the stove too but that doesn't work in summer. I'd love to be truly off grid but I'm not that hard core and am addicted to the convenience of gas. I guess now that I'm almost 70 I've turned into a pansy

The ears on the shields of my classic Craftsman Block grinder were about to break off.
Time for Gramps to take action!

I used very thin plywood to reinforce the ears, epoxy was used for the bond.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1661398299.jpg

Masked and ready for a coat of rattle can aluminum spray paint in the hopes of matching the look of the tool, at least somewhat.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1661398299.jpg

Repair complete, I charged myself nothing for my time, all materials and supplies were on hand, so the effort involved has no value!

Really like what you've got there Greg.
Question for you, does the roof have a slant to it?

Quite the following on those Craftsman block grinders. I have 2!

I've got Dad's old one out in the garage too.

Exactly why I took the time. I've got other power tools that are probably unsafe to plug in, let alone use, but I still do; I don't think I have any shields on any of my other grinders, but I wanted to keep the blockhead 'nice' because it's nice having one.

What’s a block grinder? The shape of the grinder motor housing? how old are they?

I’ll have to take a picture of mine tomorrow. It’s only about 25 to 30 years old.

I pulled this little snippet off the Garage Journal website:

"... the classic Craftsman bench grinders that were manufactured for Sears by Paramount/Allegretti & Co. from the early 1960's to early 1980's. Affectionately known as "Block Motor" grinders because of their unique shape, these power tools have developed a large following among shop enthusiasts because of their legendary reliability, accuracy, and power.

The "Block Motor" grinder can be readily identified by the Sears manufacturer prefix of 397 or 257 (as in 397.XXXXX); which is stamped on the front label. Popular models include 1/4-HP, 1/3-HP, 1/2-HP, 3/4-HP, and 1-HP Industrial units."

It does have a slight slant. The rule of thumb for avoiding ponding water on a flat surface is a quarter inch of drop per foot. My roof drops 3.5" in 12' but looks flat. I can get several feet of snow where this cabin is. No matter how steep your pitch is it can still pile up. You have to build for the load. As long as it drips off the back where it doesn't matter I'm good, and it does, I checked with a hose

Scott Douglas 08-25-2022 06:42 PM

So the back edge is the one the cabinet back is against?

The low end of the roof is in back of the refrigerator and stove. The poly roofing extends several inches past them and the rail and water sheds harmlessly onto the ground. (The tall white fridge looks like a cabinet)

The guy at the sod farm: "Good luck!"

Me: "Why do you say that?"

Him: "That's a lot of weight."

Me: Yeah, but it's a Silverado!" :p

My projects these days are a lot smaller than most of you here have undertaken. I bought an LGB locomotive off the GW site and it needed work as it didn't run. I got it running but it still had needs as the connector to the sound in the coal tender was cut off. So I found a connector and some other parts for it and today I got the sound working. Next is timing the wheels/rails so it LOOKS like a locomotive should.

A930Rocket 08-27-2022 02:58 PM

Help my friends son install LED lights under his car. Obviously, it’s not something I would do to my car, but at least his kid is into cars.

Table saw motor smoked out so i put a pool pump motor on it but it only spun the wrong way so i had to mount it on the side. It works better now. Roto tiller that i got for free and was trying to sell started leaking oil out the gearbox so I put a new seal in it. Easier said than done they are quite heavy duty a bit hard to dig out but i welded to it and then i could pry easier. Then noticed the rear wheel on my ramrod minibike was broken where the sprocket bolts on. So i weded tabs on the drum to mount where the halves bolt together. Much stronger now. Still sad about the broken wheel though.

Nothing like a good Micrometer when you need it......:D

herr_oberst 08-30-2022 03:04 PM

Do you still have the pieces of the broken wheel? JB Weld 'em on and plug the holes with shorty bolts.

porsche930dude 08-30-2022 03:22 PM

just one piece. I glued it back on. Jb weld is definately the way to go but im not concerned about it at the moment its not like anyone can see it. I dont think it will get any worse as far as the structure. The sprocket hub is supported on its own bearing. its just the twisting force that broke it all the bolts broke out the side and got crookid

Rot 911 08-30-2022 05:22 PM

Not fixing anything today, but I am painting. Repainting the downstairs bathroom that the previous owners decided one color was good for the walls and the ceiling.
