So does that mean (it is recommended) I not clean it out before install, or should (is it recommended)I try to delicately wipe the excess out. The new valve does have the Teflon internals. I am just wondering your thoughts….. I know it is a slippery slope when someone asks such questions. Aviation folks understand the disclaimer.[emoji6] In the beginning, as you mentioned, per the plans I am suppose to turn down the brass shaft by using emery cloth and taking it down .001” to remove just enough to allow the brass rod to slide into the alum tube. Everyone seems to talk-up the Allen fuel valve for a food upgrade which is great. However, all I hear is crickets when I ask about a viable solution to the shorter Allen control rod as shown in my earlier pic. The only proper way to extend it, in my mind would be to have a small stainless plug/rod TIG welded to the end, and then it turned down to the proper diameter to allow it to slide inside the alum tube. I would need to disassemble the Allen valve and remove the stainless control rod in order to have the shaft extended. That seems like a whole lot of extra work….. [emoji2371] jury is still out. The simplest would be to just use the original replacement, I guess. You are not too far off on the valve location. The LongEZ is the model that has the fuel valve between the legs on the floor of the fuselage. It was this fuel valve that was relocated and placed in a different location (deviation from the original plans) that contributed to the fatal accident with John Denver. The VariEZ(our model) has the fuel valve in a location aft of the passenger seat in a “Hellhole”. The torque tube controls the tank selection via a small lever I have under my forearm. Full right, valve is closed, full left, fuel is on and is supplied to the engine via a gravity fed system like a C-150. Lever straight up, you are running on a 2.5 gallon header tank. With the lever straight up, your arm is resting against the lever, therefore there is no way in the known universe the pilot could not no they were running on the header tank. The tank is only designed to be used in certain situations. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e91f84bcfd.jpg Thanks for the tips on diving. And time you get to blow bubbles is a good day. Traveling on the fart-tube is always a PITA when transporting our dive gear. Back on point of the thread topic. NERD ALERT! This project falls under the strange and unusual. If you have a fear of bugs, stop reading now and switch over the the cat thread. A few years ago while working the property, I came a cross two brown looking worms. They were actually baby alligator lizards. I built a terrarium with an all you can eat big bar. After they both passed on, I had a bunch of Dubia roaches(food) left over plus a load still in the tank when I cleaned it out. Dubia roaches area high protein food staple for reptiles, birds, amphibians, other animals and big spiders. Here locally, you can only buy 8 for $1.00 and only $5.00 worth. So I figured I could try to build a colony with my left over stock. My colony is slowly growing but since we do not have constant warm temps, it has slowed down. It’s pretty much a hands off project, but does require some work.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...788a707829.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4280bdfed1.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e7995e511f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3d1f82c0c5.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c63e3559fb.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d4a78960f5.jpg Here is a female, small wings https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d93d1e92fa.jpg Male, large wings. Yes, just wipe the excess away with whatever you have.... did the valve come with a lever like the one in my screen shot? If so it has the correct female key to engage the main valve shaft. Machine it or whatever handle down to a healthy diameter, the correct ID of the appropriate 4130 tube, then reduce as necessary to the correct back to front torque rod size. I've been well aware of the jd accident particulars since the ntsb report came out as I've always been a very avid Rutan design fan... the guys a narcissistic hedonist but his designs are sound, even if the go juice flows between the thighs.... Anyway I'd always thought a slightly overpowered vari single seater would be ideal for me. But too many projects for this go around.

Replaced the O rings on that bypass pipe along with the short rubber hose yesterday and got everything else installed today and torqued everything to spec.
Filled up the system and bled the air from the system. I will recheck everything in the morning and drive the car before turning it back over to the wife. So far so good!!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...dfacf27bef.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b8242b912c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9d9cf0899c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...915d31a0b9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...69559632b3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a909eade5e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b038053ef3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f6fa45c2f0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...13c5560bdd.jpg Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk |

Took the RX on a drive and all is good. The temp gauge stayed right dead in the middle. Now I still need to address that TPMS light, I think it may be that the spare tire might be low. Anyhoo, so far so good, all put back together now. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1bae0824ad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1b7daa9e83.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0365f4a051.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3b71cb5fb3.jpg

I replaced the cabin air filter in the RX350 this morning and man what a yucky mess that was. Should've taken 3 minutes but as you can see, I had some stuff to clean up. Yep, there was an old nest of some sort in there where the filter goes. The inside fan had always been loud when it was on higher speeds, I now know why. I removed a panel below the glove box and removed the fan and vacuumed the fan and filter housing area, put it all back together and, wow, no more noise!!! I also put the vehicle on my ramps and blew out the AC drain hose because we had noticed water in the driver's floor. I attached a hose to the drain hose and as I blew I heard water bubbling inside, I then put the hose to the side and a whole bunch of water came pouring out of the hose.
One thing at a time and this vehicle is getting sorted out. Next up oil cooler lines upgrade, (just arrived today), and oil and filter change. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cd77244598.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e382313dae.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ade66d98c5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...80831e2178.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...01c187c7ea.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...dee3de0c77.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...443290078e.jpg Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk |
Adjusted the front sway bar to be softer and installed the rear sway bar. Installed padding on the roll bar and started painting the stripped interior gray.

That is exactly the one I have to replace the original per plans valve. Guess the Allen fuel valve will be shelved. Thanks again https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...611625734e.jpg Will be installing this in the near future. On the two tiki palms out front - had to replace one of the uplights. The lights are pretty old and have plenty of patina so no biggie - just a routine deal.
I decided to upgrade from cast aluminum body to PVC. The PVC will last a very long time w/zero corrosion. The little 2x4 acts as a spacer to provide better overall upwards illumination. Tomorrow I will tuck the wires into some protective tubing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685501919.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685501919.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685501919.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685501919.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685501919.JPG |

I leave the 914 unattended for a few months and a friggin mouse moves in. Ate my seat! Well atleast she was neat about it. Not sure what im going to do about it yet. Maybe somebody has some scraps i can sew in? Or just sew in some black striped to both sides. Anyway her family is evicted from the glovebox. I need more dryer sheets. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685573176.JPG

Speaking of mice, I dug the granddaughter's pool out of storage in the shed and set it up yesterday. A truck brought a load of water and filled it in the afternoon. This morning it was down about a quarter. Inspection revealed a mouse had made a hole in the bottom just in from the side. I managed to pump about half into an older, smaller pool, lever the affected portion above the water and get a patch applied. By the time I got the remaining water returned to the pool, I was quite tired of kiddy pools.

Finally made solid progress on the scout today... had to do other jobs whilst waiting for a definitive course of action on the crack repair, so now that it's fixed and the old ball is back in my court I got the dacron on and did the first shrink. Totally stoked!

You must do good work if people will fly in from TX to get work done. Did someone from your shop offer to fly him back in a T-Craft, ha ha?

I've never seen it done to any other species of palm nor would I recommended it. A buddy of mine did mine many years ago and then not long after, moved to another state. I'm glad I was able to get 'em done before he left! I also bought a whole bunch of tikis he carved and still have quite a few stashed away. These are just sections of Cabbage Palm trunk - not a live tree. To answer your question, Guy....palms are Monocots, so have their vascular system distributed evenly across the trunk diameter. Hardwoods on the other hand are Dicots, so their vascular system is only in a ring just below the bark. Disrupt that ring and the tree really suffers. Quote:

Yerp, a f-ton of work awaits. Been meaning to ask you about “what appeared” to be one of those inflatable paint booths in the backdrop of one of your pics on the weld repair n skin. Burned through the new soles in record time, and now the midsole is separating. Gonna send them to Thourogood this time for “the works”, Been on a “repurpose” kick lately. Rather have sustainable boots reworked, rather than tossing them. Started with a pair of Redwings, then these and ultimately ending up with a pair of Alden 405’s, aka the Indy boot. Yes it's an inflatable booth. It works pretty well as long as you keep the bugs out and you still follow proper dust control procedures. I'll be adding a more effective exhaust soon none the less.

Tomorrow we're going to install a hoist to store this fiberglass camper shell in the garage attic.
Camper shell. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685736297.jpg Garage ceiling where we will install the hoist. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685736310.jpg Lumber that will be used as blocks to attach all the hoist hardware. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685736327.jpg All the hangers, screws and washers that will attach the lumber to the ceiling. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685736383.jpg All the hoist hardware. Cables to lift the shell and safety chains to hold the shell when in storage. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685736400.jpg All this because I'd rather keep the shell than give it away. Once the shell is removed we have a large Lance slide in camper waiting to be installed in the dually pick up. I figure instead of giving away the shell might as well hold on to it in case the Lance camper adventure is short term. This you tube video got me started but I wanted to make my hoist much more robust. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cGWj92_BM9s" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Didn't watch the video, Ted, but looks like quite an operation you have there. Amazing how many different pieces one needs just to do a seemingly simple task! Nice to have that space up there...my garage roof is flat. :)

It's been a couple of months of searching for quality pulleys and all the little parts. The camper shell only weighs 600lbs but the hoist parts are rated for 1,500lbs or more. The unknown is the the max weight carrying capacity of the 2x10 ceiling rafters. At least it helps that every other ceiling rafter is a doubled 2x10. :) Long ago I had an engineer spec my storage loft and doubled 2x10s were required for the anticipated static weight on our 20x20 storage loft. :) Hopefully 24 hours from now the hoist project will be completed.... Then it's back to the garden, like to give everything another shot of 20/20/20 fertilizer. Your yard lighting projects are interesting and I hope to find time to do the same soon. :) Late spring here, have not seen the sun much in 6 weeks. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685762409.jpg |
Always thought that would be super cool and make the shell no shell situation easier to cope with... but I never had a garage with a high enough ceiling.

Install the 750 and 850 springs on the 330 today. The rears took about 30 minutes and the fronts took about 3 hours.
Also installed height adjustable and articulating lower spring perches in the rear. We will see how it does next weekend at the track... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685843198.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685843198.jpg |
Replaced the janky oil cooler lines on the RX350 today. Yeah, look at this junk. The old set up used two rubber hoses and they were prone to developing leaks, so the set up was later changed to all metal lines. At some point in this vehicle's history, one of the rubber hoses must've been leaking and was "repaired" with some cobbled up junk. Geez, it would've been easier to just replace the old hose with another rubber hose. Anyhoo, it is all good now.
I was going to change the oil so I drained the oil and removed the oil filter canister before removing the junk oil cooler lines. I ordered an OEM filter and it was supposed to have been delivered today but nope, it is still "in transit", so I will finish things when the new filter arrives. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e33c37ae3c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a8aa97c4eb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a11fd7616a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...54db5ae567.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ffb2684554.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b574ab8772.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...03b84bc457.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a58aab7c95.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c02a63641c.jpg Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk |
I had help from 2 construction workers on ladders installing all the hardware on the ceiling while I handed them all the tools and hardware as they worked 12 to 18 feet above the garage floor.
They said I did my homework and after working 8 hours the 3 of us had the kit installed and the truck shell was hanging safely on the safety chains. Someday when the shell is gone maybe hang a big slot car track table on it or just use it for overhead storage of race car stuff. After sourcing parts for 10 weeks I'm so glad that I no longer have this hoist project hanging over my head. lol :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685909025.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685909054.jpg |
