The work you do on light aircraft is fascinating. Is the mod you're doing on the RV3 cowl something that others do too, or is this your idea, and do you have to check with Vans to do something like this so their engineers can offer advice?
|
Good thing I'm not too hung up on how great my projects look, or I'd never post after Guy.:D
However, this morning I traced out my cardboard pattern on the wall of an old water tank I'm using as scrap steel, threw a cutting disc in the angle grinder and roughed it out http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753974686.jpg Then I finalized the outline, drilled the holes for the axle and bent it to shape. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753974810.jpg It ain't pretty, but it will make raising and lowering the hay elevator so much easier. |
What are you talking about Les? That's fantastic! Both sides are symmetrical, the radius bend is straight down the spine and consistent, and you took extra time to knock off sharp corners and give it some style. Plus, the pulley looks perfectly centered side to side.
Well done. And it cost you nothin but time, in the true farmer/rancher tradition. |

This is my daughter's little rod and reel that I got her when she was a little girl, she is 25 now. I didn't have to fix anything, but the outside was stained from oil so I used some 1000 grit sandpaper and wet sanded until it was clean. I also greased the gears with some synthetic grease and it runs silky smooth!!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7081f55f7b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e411b7e7d8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...37580b70ee.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fcac6686f5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fcdaaf2f41.jpg

Guy, In the first and second images of the left wingtip, there appears to be a cap of some sort. Is that an access port? I can't imagine carrying any liquid so far from the cg.
Thanks |

It isn't everyday you pick up a term that would so succinctly come in handy to describe your future endeavours! SmileWavy Marty - Very nice work and thanks for sharing. I wonder what something like that would fetch on eBay? I know it carries sentimental value but at some point.....money kinda does as well, no? :) |
Well I got my 3 Cabbage Palms trimmed as I do each year - usually by mid-July so I'm a little late this year.
I have more Cabbage Palms on the property and more palms in general but I do these once per year and then am done. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754145838.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754145838.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754145838.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754145838.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754145838.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754145838.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754145838.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754145838.JPG |

The delammed paint gets scraped and covered with a layer of bog/spooge. It'll be sanded and shot with high fill primer. The remaining pinholes will be filled with flexible catalyzed glazing putty before final paint. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754147612.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754147612.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754147612.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754147612.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754147612.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754147612.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754147612.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754147612.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754147612.jpg |
Thanks, Guy. I remember tip tanks on jets in the '50s, but didn't think anyone would want mass so far from the roll center. I suppose on a sedate family 'sedan in the sky' it's not such an issue.

I was having a blast in the garage!
First off, the trusty El Camino was suddenly was running of 7 cylinders. OK, the old plugs have been in there for almost 70,000 miles. So I bought new plugs and plug wires. All was going normal until I found this. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754160087.jpg I feel pretty sure that is the problem! Only the plug boot was holding it in place. On occasion, it ran fine, but often it was 7 cylinders only. 8 new plugs and wires and all is OK. They needed to be replaced due to miles and age, so it was not a bad thing. Dang, when did new spark plugs become 10 bucks each! Then just because I was having so much fun in the garage, I had to replace the two pressure switches on the master cylinder on my 911. That rear switch is a royal pain in the butt to get to. :( My brake lights were stuck ON all the time. I only noticed it when I was checking the oil with the dip stick. It has not been that way for long. |
Something interesting today.... the cowl had mini blisters all over on the top... I'd supposed it was from heat and time. Well, turns out the underside was never cleaned and had gobbs of oil bonded to it, any way, turns out this fiberglass likes oil... a lot. After I managed to get the paint off I blew it off, well, the wierd crap started STIGMATA! Oil has soaked through the glass TO THE SURFACE!
Crap, what a mess. Check out the pictures. The last paint guy didn't do such a hot job on prep, check out the way the paint practically jumps of the oil door!;)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754193830.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754193830.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754193830.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754193830.jpg |

I cleaned up another little fishing reel. I bought this for a niece of mine when she was four years old and I took her fishing for the first time, she turned 17 a few days ago. It is all cleaned up now, has a little discoloration on the light pink part but it's okay, and is working fantastically with synthetic grease on the gears inside. I had the rod and reel in a bucket and I am glad I did because some of the letters in her name had fallen off and I found them at the bottom of the bucket. I cleaned everything up and used some clear contact cement and glued the letters back in place. Mimi is happy!!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b11261345a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9fbbf7548a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2ba132e66a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...533390ceb7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6a4e9c1b83.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...17d7100cef.jpg

Up next on the work desk, the Diawa Procaster PMA 10S that belonged to my stepfather. I am taking it apart for cleaning, maintenance, and service. It will get the same treatment as the others with synthetic grease and sewing machine oil. There are lots of little parts and gears in this one. I wonder what these reels cost when new? I figure it is from the late 70s or early 80s. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2f025fb395.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...52ede704af.jpg

Good on you Marty for putting the time and effort into that.
GF had her dad's stuff and said she was keen to go fishing but didn't know if her dad's rod and reel was any good. It was an Ambassador Abu. I said it sure is. He lived next to NZ's premier salmon river so knew what it was all about. I gave it a good clean and light oil, then took her out to catch blue cod in my lil' dinghy. I think if her dad was looking down on her he'd be quite chuffed. |
Thanks. I am looking forward to using the Diawa for sure, I've never used a reel like that before. I also have the original Diawa pistol grip rod for it as well.

Replacing pedestal liners on a railroad car truck. The steel liners are welded to the frame with stainless steel rods. The guy who cut the welds off for us before, used a carbon arc "Torch" but he was unavailable. An oxygen/acetylene cutting torch will not touch the stainless so had to burn the manganese steel liners around the welds to remove them. That left a ton of stainless steel and bits of the liners that remained to be ground off with angle grinders.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754324124.JPG Explanation of some of the parts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754324124.JPG After reassembly with the wheel bearing and the new plastic liner installed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754324124.jpg |
Wow - that's impressive, Jolly! I don't know jack about what goes into making railroads work but have always been fascinated when I see them go by at a crossing.
Thank you for sharing - and please stay safe!!! :) |
The sequel to the other day...lots of super clean, lots of pressure washing, lots of acetone.
The play here was to remove all the oil saturation I could then to layup another lamination of 4 oz glass. The blue goo is superfill, an epoxy based filler, with micro. It works well to fill the weave of the glass. Tomorrow a quick sand then high fill catalyzed primer and flexible catalyzed glazing putty, then a seal coat of epoxy and paint.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754368346.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754368346.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754368346.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754368346.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754368346.gif |
Something more simple than I remember installed 2 new bike tires and inner tubes in like 10 minutes.
Getting the camper, trailer and race car ready takes a lot longer. Got a $70 truck cover and sliced the bed area so I can use it with the camper installed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754502784.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754502795.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754502916.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754502812.jpg |
We finished reassembling the truck after installing refurbished wheel sets, jacked the end of the car up, pulled the shop truck out and rolled the rebuilt truck back under and lowered the car back onto it.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754510932.jpg After reattaching the air brake hose, the side bearings had to be adjusted. Me, being the littlest guy in our group, was chosen to squeeze in to the gap between the car body and the truck frame to perform that task. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754510932.JPG An explanation of the side bearings. These prevent the car body from rocking from side to side on the trucks when encountering rough track. The suspension in the truck side frames should handle that. The bearings are made up of a composite material, similar to brake pads, bonded to a chunk of steal that has mounting holes at either end to bolt to the truck frame. Normally there is supposed to be a little over 1/16" (1.6mm) clearance. When the truck rotates as the car goes around a curve, the bearing blocks can make contact and slide along under the car. However after unbolting and removing the bearing blocks to clean the rust scale off all the surfaces including the existing shims, the gaps increased considerably. I had to fabricate some new shims, slotted to slide around the retaining bolts, while the blocks were loosely mounted in place then tighten up the bolts again. This image was taken when the car was first jacked up off the truck. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754510932.JPG |
Thank you for sharing those pictures. I love this site just for this kind of insight. All this technology hiding in plain sight.
Railroading stuff in general is fascinating. The engineering of many of the systems is very clever, and often 'simple in concept' (for instance the couplers), but obviously invented by mechanical geniuses. I remember once reading about the interaction between the wheels and the railroad track. There's a hell of a lot more to that than meets the eye. Another simple idea - conical wheels - solving multiple problems: The opposing forces keep the train on the track, and the differing diameters through turns allow for differential action even though the wheels are on a common, solid axle. There's a video on YouTube that shows the various systems in the BigBoy. Man o man. The linkage of the drivetrain, the engineering of the firebox, the path of the steam and the coal smoke.... All just engineering marvels. Sorry for the tangent, JollyArmanto. My mind wandered looking at the pictures of the repairs of the rail cars. |
The train stuff is very interesting. Im sure its not easy work with everything being so big and heavy.
Today I changed the cleaning ladys original alternator on her 04 matrix with somewhere over 300k on it. The odo stopped at 299,999 they all do that. |
Man that's some serious work!!!

My granddaughter was careless enough to push her little lcd desk lamp to the back of her desk hard enough to break the jack. So this afternoon I took the jack and receptacle out of the circuit ( being careful to preserve polarity) and solder the wires together. Function was restored .:D

Looking better!
Living out here in the country with a 1/4 mile long driveway, it is so odd seeing screens up around scrap piles and the portapotty. Ain't progress wonderful?! Serious question: will the lawns have to be sodded to meet community standards or can you just seed the area? |
Impressive build!

I got the Diawa Procaster PMA 10-S reel all back together today and man, it works great!!! This thing is super smooth. I had to play around with the anti-backlash and spool tension a bit to get the spool spinning how I liked, but once dialed in, oh yeah!!! Now this reel will live on to fish for many years to come. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...45c70be954.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f79d813bce.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e454a49b68.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8ec2742877.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c6437f18ac.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f0cf14b80c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9668c5a393.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b95ecee375.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...476ca532a4.jpg
