What is your Hemoglobin a1c level at?
I must admit that I was kinda shocked at mine.....6.2!
I'm considered to be at a prediabetes level. I'm quite diligent about getting lots of exercise on a weekly basis...3 days of weights/circuit training plus 2-3 days of cardio plus I cross-country ski/hike quite a bit. I'm 5'11" @175 lbs so I'm gonna try to drop 5-8 lbs. It must be my diet as I do eat lots of "starches"...potatoes, pasta, rice which I love so my plan is to drop the carbs and get back to the veggies asap. So what is your level at and what have you done to try to lower it?

Good for you for getting this checked. I was diagnosed with late onset type 1 diabetes at 54. Mine was 11.3 at the time I tipped over and almost ended up in the hospital. I've managed it between 5.9 and 6.1 with insulin since. Keep an eye on it and good luck.
A book I recommend is What Should I Eat by Rick Mystrom https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/159433448X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I've heard him speak and he is phenomenal. Best of luck!

Mine was 6.1 five years ago, then it went up to 6.6 as of three years ago. I ate some ice cream, cookies & candy occasionally, pasta, white bread etc. No sugary drinks though. So three years ago I cut out almost all things with sugar, white bread, candy, ice cream, baked goods and concentrated on protein (but not excessive), vegetables, and some fruit. My A1c is down to 6.2 now, and I'm not positive it will go much lower. My primary care guy prescribed a monitor for me to use but according to it, my blood sugar level is pretty normal. I have noticed I don't tolerate sugar (when I do have some) and some other things well anymore so I pretty much avoid them. I'm supposing my body has accustomed itself to not having to process it and notices when I put sugar into it. Since I'm a bit older, I imagine that may be part of the problem too.

Well, apparently my wife of some 28 years has been "pre-diabetic" since our now 23 year old son was born. She did develop gestational diabetes (that much I knew!) which puts her at risk. Her's has been varying between 5.8 to 6.2 since then. She is quite active so I'm sure that's what's keeping her a1c from going too high.
Just when you think you know your spouse....apparently not well enough in my case! ![]()

6.9 last blood draw...happy it's below 7. No insulin yet..meds and trying to keep carbs low. diagnosed type 2 around a decade ago. So sick of the whole thing, kind of taking Tabbys view on life. Hell, I'm 75, most of my buddies have already left the planet...so, guess I'm sort of ready to join them. Kind of wondering which will get me first...the afib, the abdominal aenurism, or the diabetes? Well, it won't be the Macular degeneration, the glaucoma, or the small cataracts. Those have only sent my pool game into the krapper.

pre diabetic is like being sort of pregnant, more a matter of poor glucose control, and what measured need to be taken to correct it, insulin, pills, diet, exercise or a combination of things
as you age, the normal range sort of creeps up Glucose becomes irreversibly bound to hemoglobin proportional to what your average blood sugar has been over the prior 3 months. 3 months because that is about how long, approximately, your red blood cells last. The number you are looking at is the percentage of your blood cells that have sugar sticking to them

I only see a total Hemoglobin count on my blood work from my physical. Is the a1c portion something not usually run for a yearly?

A1C is a separate test not run unless there is a diagnosis or suspicion of diabetes

Interesting....I've only read that above 6.5 you're considered to be diabetic at any age. What would be the "normal" range for a 58.5 year old?
