Having friends and extended family-by-marriage who lost family members to the Holocaust, its pretty important every year.
I've met a few survivors... The one I enjoyed most, back in the mid 80s... Was going in the door of a small town gun show, old guy was trying to tote out four cases of 30-06 ammo, so I grabbed two and helped him to his car. I asked if he was a HP rifle competitor or similar, and he said that he didn't shoot a lot, and he was mostly stocking it up and saving it. When he put his cases down, he pointed down to his arm... he asked if I knew what the tattoo meant, I said "Yes, of course" and he said "Never again". Almighty G-d, remember the six million people that were gassed, killed, drowned, burned alive, tortured, beaten or frozen to death. For the sake of one man, a whole nation was crucified, while the world looked on in silence. In our hearts, their sacred memory will last forever and ever. Amen.G-d of Our Fathers, let the ashes of the children incinerated in Auschwitz, the rivers of blood spilled at Babbi Yar or Majdanek, be a warning to mankind that hatred is destructive, violence is contagious, while man has an unlimited capacity to cruelty. Almighty G-d, fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah: “They shall beat their swords into ploughshares . . . nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” Amen. This a good time to watch Schindler's List. It really brings home the raw feeling of what happened.
My mother rode in a cattle car. My great-grandparents died in Auschwitz.

Next door neighbors in upstate New York were Holocaust escapees.
The wife was 3 when then left Czechoslovakia. They were in Paris during the German invasion of France. Barely got out to England and then the USA. The Husband was 10 years old when they walked out of Austria in 1938 to Switzerland.

I had a college chemistry professor, Roald Hoffman, who was a Holocaust survivor. Very cool and privileged to have had an undergraduate professor who was also a Nobel Prize laureate.

Stalin was planning a Holocaust of his own in Russia when he had a stroke in 1953.

Last year at our legal aid society fundraiser the keynote speaker was the youngest survivor of Auschwitz. He showed historical photos of him in the camp, both from captured Nazi archives and when the Soviets liberated the camp. At the end of the presentation he showed us his tattoo. It was chilling.

Visiting Dachau was life altering. It is in Bavaria, which is green and lovely.
Bavaria looks a lot like Western Oregon, where I have lived my entire life. Lesson: If it can happen there, it can happen anywhere. What do we do with this? We need to be vigilant. We need to protect democracy. We need to speak up when we see injustice. We need to resist scapegoating, hate speech, and over-simplification of our problems and issues. We need to vote. We need to be grateful for what we have and assist other's so that they might overcome their obstacles to a better life. We need to work to reduce human suffering. We need to be loving and kind. I heard survivor Alter Wiener speak a few years ago. (Home Page) He said that Hitler was devoid of love. He said that we as humans need to love more. I certainly need to work on being a better person. Let's take this day and make an effort to be better humans. |

I grew up in (Brooklyn) with next door neighbors that had the serial no. tattoos. I was best friend with the son/grandson of the family. I grew up as an Italian kid in their home.
I then bought a home in '88 and my new neighbors were Polish Jews who also had the tattoos. Both these families were the kindest people I have ever met. I have always had a special place in my heart for them. I was taught to "Never Forget" and passed the lesson on to my children. Hate will always have a place on this earth, but it is up to us to be aware of when it raises it's ugly head.

Fewer survivors are still with us each year.
Never forget.

Lost most of my family on my father's side in the camps. My dad and grand parents escaped to the US in 39. My dad joined the US air corps and later got shot down in his B17. He was captured and ended up in the camps. He made it to the end of the war and ended up teaching at UCLA where he met my mom. Some of his stories still send chills down my spine.
