Mercedes M275 Engine
I'm a collector. Something tells me I should have one of these sitting in my garage under a blanket. They're cheap, like LSx cheap. Am I nuts? I wonder if one would fit in an E36.
Discuss.

small turbo = quicker spool.
wiki says 500 hp, 600 ft/lbs trq. Bigger turbos will prolly get 100+ hp out of it. The LSX 454 is 600-ish hp N/A. However, also 12 grand. For 3 grand on a M275... that's a lot of bang for buck. Gut the accessory drives on it, adapter plate for transmission combo, and tune the ecm to run stand-alone. Would prolly be at half the price of the lsx 454.

I'm thinking there is much less aftermarket support for the MB engine vs. LSx variants.
Have read a number of threads on the topic of swapping MB diesel engines into other chassis, and one issue I've seen is that the engine ECU needs to handshake with other components (like the dashboard and transmission control units) in order to run. While anything is feasible, I'd imagine a whole lot of engineering is required.

It will be under $3000 to get 600HP out of a LSx. I’m sure it could be done for under $2000.

Ticking time bomb that is. You can take a 5.3 and install stiffer springs so you don't float valves, corvette cam, and bubba junkyard turbo it. That'll net 500 + hp. I've built one, and they pop. My 928 has seen more engines than a tug shop in Florida. Well maybe not that many, but after the fourth I'm convinced on the lsx376 will be the next one.

I dig it, think it would be a great swap into anything. Pretty sure you'll need the body control module as the ECM will need to see the security system disabled, recognizing the ignition key / chip.

I’d prefer that ride with a diesel.
This G wagon isn’t diesel, but it is bulletproof...maybe a better candidate for the OP’s engine https://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/cto/d/palmer-1984-mercedes-benz-class/6822184587.html Last edited by jwasbury; 03-07-2019 at 08:31 PM.. |

That’s pretty awesome but unless you are a stud with standalone engine management it would be a nightmare to get running correctly, not to mention interfacing with the rest of the car.
