FWIW, I paid just around $2,500 for rebuilding my unit to upgraded specs + labor at my local shop.

If price is not an issue definitely upgraded, it's my understanding the Sun Gear failure is not completely mileage dependent. One of those things that can last forever or blow in 50K.

When mine went I was stopped at a stop sign and I don't beat my vehicles and never towed with this one.

Just me, but I would still make sure it is not something small like electrical issue or cable adjustment before pulling out for rebuild. I would think trans shop should be able to check for codes?

Take it to a transmission shop first instead of coming here for advice? No, man...he needs to remove the transmission himself in his driveway and bring it somewhere. If he doesn't have another vehicle, he needs to call an Uber and jump in w the transmission.

How long have you been on Pelican?

Bonus points if he destroys his driveway w spilled ATF in an attempt to save a couple hundred dollars in labor. Championship Jeopardy points if he drops the trans on cement and cracks the case or loses an arm.

Ive got one also. When I first got started, I did a metric ton of honda work. I had just hired a new employee, and he had watched me do a few clutches , where I did not even use a trans jack, just pulled them out ( on a lift) with my tool cart under it and I would set them down gently on the cart. They were probably about 100 lbs.
He was doing his first automatic on an Accord. I saw him line up the cart underneath and get ready to drop without the jack. He was a big muscular guy, but sort of a lummox .
I yell over "hey those automatics are pretty heavy, you should use the transmission jack " .
He proceeded to tell me how tough he was .
2 seconds later, my cart is smashed to all hell, there is transmission fluid everywhere, and he is standing there with a dumb look on his face .
As soon as he pulled it off the pins, gravity took over . I still have that cart, and rag him about it every once in a while .

Possibly did not word that properly, a second opinion, to check or have a few things checked before having it pulled, but a good trans shop should know what to look for as far as codes and common problems.

Just thinking that it could be a electrical or valve body problem that just requires removal of the pan vs a clutch pack or something deeper that requires removal of the trans. Thats all.

If he wants to pull it himself he should use his neighbours driveway, but sounds like he has other projects to do.

Thanks for that link and for your advice. You’ve been a great help! I called my hydraulic hose guy and he recommended a very reputable local transmission shop. I called and asked what upgrades they might do on a 4L60E and the owner went through the whole process, which included everything that you’ve mentioned. And the price is about $1000 less. So that’s where my truck is heading!

908930, It’s not throwing any codes at the moment, it’s just slipping like crazy.

Speeder, you can slow down now! :-) When I don’t know something, I ask. Without the help of you fine gentlemen, I wouldn’t know what to look or listen for in a transmission shop. I have confidence in you guys, so when I hear advice here that compares with what I’ve received locally, it gives me confidence in the local guy. It’s that simple.

On a side note, our 44 RE would not shift into 4th (overdrive) one January day. After I drive a while it finally decided to shift. Transmission guy said that is normal if they are very cold. Those transmissions won't go into overdrive until there is heat in the fluid.
