can't get out of here quickly enough

anybody seen this? https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/sunnyvale-crash-driver-intentionally-hit-pedestrians-injuring-8-police-say/ar-BBWeTJ4?ocid=spartandhp

about a 1/2 mile from my house that is currently in escrow so I can get the hell out of here. I became fed up with my life long hometown's out of control growth a few years back and the frustration that the over population has created. I don't understand the driver's motivation, which early indicators are that this was an intentional act, but I feel what very well could have been his frustration with the manhattanification of this place.

can not get the last of my stuff moved out and up to the foothills soon enough. what used to be the orchard town of my youth is long gone replaced with traffic, over population, over building, horn honking and really rude people. so sad.

Irrespective of that incident, I'm happy you can find your peace in the hills. Retiring perhaps?

yep, about six months ago I took early retirement after 20+ years of employment with the same city I grew up in & this incident occurred. it's costing me some pension money, but 2.5 more years here was not doable no matter the cost.

the only upside to the over population is that real estate values are helping in financing my exit. ive found I rarely leave the house much anymore due to the traffic and over crowding. I realize time marches on and changes are a way of life, ive just decided the change I needed was to GTFO.

I prolly won't even visit much once I get relocated because all of my family has left the area for more rural settings and many of my life long friends have left long ago. im hitting reset on what will hopefully be a more rewarding quality of life for the last 1/3 of my existence.

it hit me a few years back that money is not the most important thing. ill have plenty, but im not going to be miserable to achieve another $1000 a month in pension. can't wait to shut the light off when I leave here in a few weeks.

Sounds good. Where are you going? Some of those 'foothills' in NorCal can get way too hot for me. It's too hot in Long Beach, 8 miles from the ocean. Of course 1/2 mile from the ocean is perfect...

... a perfect million for a starter home. I get you point about real estate.

I'm in the same boat... the little town of San Pedro has become a mish-mash of gentrification, homeless, and gangsters. Politicians pushing through useless multi-million fancy projects to get their face in the news while the town is crumbling around us.

I would love to bail out but the money isn't there to do it.

My Uncle is in Foresthill just outside of Auburn (below the snow and above the fog as he says), nice there but when I exit, it will be leaving the entire state and the screwed up politics..

Congrats on the retirement, glad you made a little money on your investment. Hope future changes in the state don't make you contemplate another move too soon.

zeke, I will miss the weather no doubt. im going to the twain harte/Sonora area where it can definitely get hot in the summer. thing is there are rivers, lakes, big shade trees & AC for those sweltering nights.

having grown up here there are very few places ive not been, things the place had/has to offer ive not done over the years. doing them again with thousands of other people looking to experience what ive already have here has run it's course. i have only been away from here for a couple six month stays in Tahoe at squaw valley 30 years ago so i can not wait to explore and experience new things in a new to me area. it may be difficult getting used to the more extreme weather up there, but what's going on here is NOT working for me any longer.

i can only hope the door hits me in the ass...

We moved to a little place of around 1,400 population around ten years ago. Every time I/we go down into the maddening crowds and congested freeways, we return here with a sense of relief. The weather is great, no flood risks, I've got a good fire defense zone and house design that mitigates fire risk (hopefully), it's quiet, and uncongested. I'd never again want to live "down there."

considered Nevada for the tax benefit, but my folks being in Monterey and not getting any younger the 3-3.5 hour drive from Sonora to there is appealing. ive also have a number of friends in the area so im going to have plenty of contacts. it's to the point that if i became too rural i may have gone all ted kazinski with the hermit's life. not married, no kids.

shoot, if i get bored enough (not likely) i can always look for some employ to stay busy. ive always joked i could easily see myself as the creepy old guy in plumbing at home depot

thanks for the encouraging words guys.

Well, whatever state you go to, don't vote for the same political types that made your state unlivable. Oregon has become thoroughly Californicated to the point of there really being no difference as far as who is in political power is concerned.

While I don't doubt your description of population growth and traffic where you live, (I've certainly experienced it everywhere in the San Jose area), the fact of the matter is that where this horrible event took place is a very safe area in general. Bad things can and do happen everywhere, (although very rarely around there), that would not be a rational reason to leave.

Traffic, yes.

They have crazy people everywhere.

You only have to live in Nevada for 6 months and a day annually to get the tax benefit, just sayin'

It's been several years, but I've been in the San Jose and San Fran area several times in the 1999-2014 time range. The area has things to offer, but you're exactly right, the crowds and traffic and growth have made it pretty miserable. I wouldn't want to live there unless I was super rich and could afford to live right by my office and a parking spot for my helicopter to take me to my weekend/gateway house away from all of the crowds.

Traffic, yes.

I would agree to much of what you post above regarding the safety of the area in general. it's not safety concerns that have soured me on the area and I think ive touched on many of the reasons for my exodus above.

thing is that the crime numbers are kinda skewed here to some extent in Sunnyvale IMO. im not completely sure how other local agencies conduct their business but as a 1st hand example ive experienced is porch package theft. if you can not prove the loss was in excess of $1000 they will not even take a report on it. that dollar amount seems excessive, and frankly who has a package delivered w/o signature in excess of 3-400 dollars anyway? other property crimes that don't exceed that same threshold are treated the same way, no report, no crime, no accurate crime numbers is the objective. the department does have public service officers that are not full sworn officers that could take just such reports for more accurate crime stats.

they have demonstrated that they will not report things like peeping toms in neighborhoods to warn residents until something bad actually happens. im not suggesting this is a concealed carry sort of place, but there are events that are never reported as crimes that should in fact be figured into the numbers. I guess it has helped in keeping my insurance rates down over the years. crime does not even crack the top 10 in reasons I want to leave here.

there are other specific reasons I want to leave here that ive not touched on specifically, but look to my location avatar for a hint....

I grew up there, off Saratoga ave and Payne, when it was all orchards. It was a great place to grow up. It started to change in the late seventies, and by the time I came back home from the military in 89, I knew that everything that I valued about the area was gone.
This place is now turning into the bay area, lots of people fleeing that mess.
Cant blame em.

I am 2 years away from leaving California all together.

i lived in Cupertino for 25 years. I have been in San Jose for about the same amount of time. I traveled extensively for work. I have been in all 50 states, about 15 countries, and I always come back.

At this point, I can see myself leaving. I have a lot of family here, so it will probably not happen anytime soon, but the population density is getting out of hand. If only I could find similar weather somewhere else...
