You can't light gasoline with a cigarette.
you can with a match or a lighter, and rules are rules. I follow rules and would never do that, plus i don't smoke.
But squirt me and my car with a fire extinguisher and it's on.

Did some of the stations remove the "No Smoking" signs? I looked for one the other day when some dOOd was puffing on a fag and didn't see any. I asked him to put it out anyway because it was bothering me and he complied with an apology.

Well yes you can, it's extremely difficult but not impossible.

The problem with people thinking it's safe to smoke at pumps are the residuals.

Like actually lighting a cigarette while pumping.

You guys have to understand that this happened in Bulgaria. In Bulgaria, it is still perfectly acceptable to kick the schitt out of ass holes that either don't get it, or are too stoopid to follow common sense rules. No one cares if a cigarette can actually start a fire at a gas station. They do care, however, that it is clearly posted "no smoking", and that the attendant pointed that out. Politely. At first. Met with arrogant punk ass resistance, he did the right thing, and eliminated the threat. I'm relatively certain that if the smoking punk had pressed it any further, the attendant would have simply split his skull with the fire extinguisher. Other customers would have likely simply dragged the carcass back to the car and encouraged them to leave.

I do, of course, jest. What really happened is that the local cops showed up and encouraged the smoker and his buddies to leave. In a most "Bulgarian" sort of way, I'm sure.

When the smoking lamp is out, you don't smoke.

I did just about have a heart attack when a crusty old bastage threw his butt in a can of JP-5, he laughed, it was not funny.

I am pretty sure if you hit them truck side up, it is not assault with a deadly weapon

It's using a flame and lighting the smoke.
Static electricity fires are not good either. https://youtu.be/1tYO4jvnJHw

https://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/27/automobiles/27STATIC.html
Mr. Renkes analyzed reports of the 170 static electricity service-station fires from 1992 to 2006. Seventy-eight percent of the victims were female, he said, “and they were skinny.” He said that heavier people, and men in general, are more likely to hoist themselves out by grasping the car door, thus grounding any charge they may be carrying before reaching for the nozzle

For those who live in Eastern Europe or are familiar with the that culture, they would find this clip hilarious or maybe it is quite common. I personally didn't find it funny at all. I grew up in the 50s and early 60s. Did I see people smoking and filling cars up with gas? absolutely. Did I see cars running while being fueled? - you bet.

Mythbusters did a segment on this. They found that women are more likely to lock the gas pump on and sit back in the car while it's filling up.

In Aus we can't lock the pump on. You have to hold it manually for it to fill the car.

Really? Wow, what a pain.

I always fill up my tank, and that is usually about 17 gallons total buy the time I am down to a 1/4 tank. I can start the pump going, go inside the convenience store, buy some beer and be back outside before the pump is done pumping. After 28 years and over 320,000 miles of driving my El Camino I have never had any issue with the pump not shutting off automatically. It shuts off and the tank is full.

On the 911 it is like filling up a bucket. When the pump shuts off, there is no more room for gas at all, but I do usually stand next to the 911 to keep the hose from touching the paint.

liquid gasoline, no
You can flick the burning cigarette straight in a bucket of gas.

but you can ignite a mixture of air & fuel vapors and that's the stuff you can find near a tank nozzle and open fuel tank.

Its not very likely to happen, but it can happen
hell, some gas stations burned to the ground from just static discharge near the filler.

FWIW, I filled my truck up last night and did see they still have a "No Smoking" sign at the pumps.

I watched a friend of mine change out a fuel filter with gas dripping and puddling around him, cigarette in mouth. I thought he was nuts. Too prove to me how safe it was he dropped the cigarette in to the puddle of gas at his feet, no fire.

The guy's not even pumping gas.
