A shame really. The fastest horse was DQ for shifting lanes that had no impact on Country House.

I know nothing about horse racing rules but I think that was a BS call . The horse lead the entire race .

do you think 65 to 1 odds had any effect on the decision?

i know nothing about this particular situation, but in general I am weary of all the complications and contingencies that arise in any competition. From presidential elections to superbowls to horse racing, there is always a “but.”
It’s gotten so you can’t even flip a coin and get an unambiguous result.

The story I read is Maximum Security impeded several horses lines through out the race. If that's the rule then fine but impeding a line? Seems to me that's a strategy to win, one that every car race ever has utilized.

The interesting piece is that he edged away from the boards, slightly impeding two other horses, but not the 2nd place horse. Neither of the impacted horses posted the challenge. Neither felt it affected their position. The unaffected 2nd place team posted the challenge. So, they know they lost to a faster horse, but posted the challenge to get the faster horse disqualified, handing them the win.

My guess is the rule is in place to protect the safety of the horse that gets cut off

In watching that video, you have to wonder why the jockey took his horse off the inside rail?
Even if it was unintentional, it doesn't seem very smart.

![]() JK Peter - I know what you meant. She's probably right but I can't help but think that was his undoing.

The jockey stated that the horse was startled by the crowd noise coming onto the straight and that he pulled him back into line as soon as he could. It certainly wasn't intentional and did not affect the 2nd place finisher at all. I hate when sporting events are decided by technicalities like this.

Ohhhh, 65 to 1. Now THAT appeals to me.
My horse racing tip for you all. Don't bet on the horse, bet on the jockey. Top jockeys never ride bad horses. And when horses are being quietly prep'ed up for a win the owners and trainers don't mind paying extra for the best jockey. |

The problem with what happened yesterday is it sets a precedent. That's the worst part. I can see demands for video replays of every perceived misstep at every future Derby. Eventually with lawyers involved and days of slo-mo video analysis.
When I was watching live, I thought to myself 'holy ****, this is some rough and tumble action coming out of the final turn. In the slop no less! This is real old-school horse racing boys & girls!' 30 minutes later .... the Derby may have changed forever ![]() ![]() |

Agree. These are animals, not humans or automobiles. Removing latitude for imperfection will change the sport...but not for the better. I think it was a bad call for horse racing.

It was the correct call. It has been a rule in the sport for a hundred years. It ain't NASCAR rules.

Whether it was the animal or the jockey is immaterial. Watching it live with a roomful of horse people, we all thought there would be a protest. Its just too dang dangerous for the trailing horse. These horses make 100's of millions in stud, and one with a broken leg generally gets put down, so its financial as well as safety.
Right call...
