I don't tune in for the pagentry, the back stories, or the after interviews, I tune in to watch a horse race that I have never bet on.

Pretty cut and dry foul, even with little knowledge of the sport. Yeah, a horse race up close will take your breath away.

Watching a horse race can be kinda fun. There is a track just 5.5 miles from my house. In the 30+ years they have been open, I have been twice. First time was fun, second time was boring to me.
From what the news is saying about it, it is not uncommon across the country in a horse race for a horse to be disqualified for what happened. Rubbing is not racing with horses evidently. This is just the first time it has happened in the big race. Lots of money bet and spent. Not one cent from me, so I don't give a flip.

As wet as that track was they were lucky nobody fell, some bumping with that many horses would seem possible and even at that, he led wire to wire.

I've got a friend who is a horse person. She said the call was 100% legit. It just happened in a very high profile race, but it happens all the time.

I like watching dogs and horses when they run for the sheer joy of it. Brings a smile to my face every time. But I don’t care to watch them race.

And this is exactly what I was talking about earlier in that a precedent has now been set wherein all future Derbies will be determined, not by the fastest horse, but by excruciating frame-by-frame analysis for weeks, months, and years by attorneys in a courtroom.
Based on the video above, why wasn't War of Will DQ'd for the obvious cheating out of the gate, or the several other infractions shown? Video also sure seems to clear Maximum Security. In fact, I'll bet a frame-by-frame analysis of every past Derby would result in multiple DQs for technical infractions ... how long before an enterprising young attorney begins? Better call Saul! |

It’s a tough situation.
You obviously have to have some rules, I don’t think a horse race can be a free for all. But that video sure does seem to clear Maximum Security. Or at least explain why he did what he did, which was try to get away from that other horse who struck him many times and put him in real danger or going down. In the expert opinion clip the guy says it was a good call because MS clearly interfered the other horses, but that ignores the fact the War of Wills clearly interfered MS first, and many times, which caused MS to have to protect itself. What a mess for the Derby. Last edited by McLovin; 05-12-2019 at 05:03 AM.. |

Many horses get run down and passed down the stretch. So we can't say he was the fastest horse since by moving off the rail and causing other horses to back down he created an advantage that is illegal by the rules that have been in place for decades.

Next year, instead of Donna Barton riding up to interview the winner of the Derby, John Morgan is going to ride up with a fistful of business cards

I think the horse that was said to have been impeded was causing most of his own problems in the entire race.

Except he was forced off the rail by the illegal actions and multiple contacts from War of Wills.

Specifically, this is what they ruled:
“We determined that the 7 horse [Maximum Security] drifted out and impacted the progress of No. 1 [War of Will], in turn interfering with the 18 [Long Range Toddy] and 21 [Bodexpress],” she said. “Those horses were all affected, we thought, by the interference.” That video seems to prove that is a bad ruling. War of Wills is the one who impeded and interfered. |

Clearly, War of Will should be DQ'd if the letter of the rules are being enforced this year. And assume I had $500 on Maximum Security to win. If he is reinstated, do I have a basis for legal action to recover my winnings? And if I won money on Country House, do I have to give it back?
