If you were in the market for a new pickup

... say, Toyota Tacoma size, would you be tempted to go look at the new Jeep Gladiator?

Personally, I find them to be as fugly as homemade shoes, but realistically, this design had to have gone through layer after layer of market research before they okayed Job 1, right? Think it will sell in big numbers?
I think it would look better as a 2 door, but Jeep says two door Wranglers sell poorly, so it's 4 door only for this School Bus sized adventure sled.

There was one out front when I passed the Jeep/Dodge dealership last night.

I thought that it looked terrible. I guess that a 5' bed isn't unique but that is to small for me to consider.

Sat in a 4 door jeep wrangler unlimited recently. Could not move the seat back far enough to be close to comfortable.

I am a big fan of the Wrangler but a thumbs down on the pickup version.

One of my friends bought a brand new Jeep Wagoneer. He said the car would break down just sitting in the garage overnight.

He had to call the dealership to come tow it out of his garage twice after driving it home and parking. He was happy that it broke down in a convenient place, but upset of the reliability as he had bought it for his wife. After getting it "fixed" several times he made them take the car back and he bought a different vehicle.

Here's a concept two door Gladiator that Jeep/Mopar put together. WAY better looking to my eyes; however, like a lot of you I will never own a new Jeep.

For what I would need a pickup for, the Gladiator would work fine. It would also fit in the garage just fine. New full sized trucks are nice, but very tall now and hard to use the bed from the sides. I have no issues with the Jeep brand either. Then again, I don't think Toyota trucks (Tacoma) are what they once were.

Glen, how long ago was that Wagoneer purchase?

One of the cars mags compared a Gladiator to the new Ford Ranger, except for price they liked the Gladiator better.

In another review a magazine liked the Chevy best.

Highs: Compared with the others, it drives like a 911.
Lows: Well, a 911 with a gritty engine and a low-budget interior.
Verdict: Most of the virtues of the other trucks all rolled into one.
I wish the Gladiator came in a two door or at least a club cab, that wheelbase is donkey kong long and the bed is stupid short.

That would be a deal breaker for me. But yeah, if I was thinking pickup, the jeep would be the first to look at.

I took such a beating on a Jeep Cherokee that I've never considered one again. Admittedly years ago but all aspects of that deal went so badly that never again.

They will sell like crazy and --- probably with Dealer markups early on.
and like all Jeeps have a ridiculous resale value vs their reliability.

Those things look like they cut the front of a Wrangler and the back of a Tacoma and welded them together.

Yes, I would. Loved the concept since AEV started building Brute conversions from four door Wranglers back in 2004 or so. Of course, they would also do a V8 conversion, lift, etc and you'd be on the hook for $100-$120K. They apparently were building enough of them that Jeep took the cue and brought it in house. AEV discontinued their version last year ahead of the release of the Gladiator. There were over 4000 limited edition pre-launch vehicles that sold out, and from what a local dealer says, they can't even order down spec S or S Sport models yet, only the upper end Overland and Rubicon models. Stickers for those were $50k-$65k on the ones I saw on the lot. A diesel model is also slated for release.

My son bought a new Cherokee last year and loves it. Buy what you want. They’re all pretty darned good.
