Garage
Garage workbench/space

I really want to take on rebuilding my 3.0L in a few years... So I want to set up a very nice space to work very cleanly and organized.

I also don't want to spend all my money on the space, rather spend it on the car.

I have seen lots of garage threads, but I am looking for cool solutions to work benches and generally good space ideas to facilitate my future engine rebuild... things I might not have thought the I need.

Thanks guy!

Setting up my workspace-
The flat benches use a solid core door as the top surface.
The back one- One sheet of 3/4 plywood with 12 inches ripped leaves a three foot wide main surface with a one foot wide upper shelf.

For the first one - went with a commercial setup second go round - used old kitchen cabinets and mdf. 1.5” wood furring strip on the front and then glued laminate over top. If you only glue the edges the laminate can be replaced fairly easily and it’s not that expensive. It also wipes clean and was way cheaper than Formica countertops.

Alan,

Thanks for the input!

Could you please expound on your laminate recommendation with photo(s) or links to specific products?

Thanks!!!

Doesn't show up well in the first picture, but against the back wall is an 8-foot long stainless steel table I got several years ago from a place that bought & sold used restaurant equipment.

The top is very solid, and stain proof, being stainless. I also have a bunch of miscellaneous Porsche fasteners & bits in stainless trays that were from a salad bar.

Maybe check craigslist under the "Business" section for similar items.

Nice build. Do you have a thread? I'd love to build sn RV-10, but alas, I've already got more projects than time. When do you think she'll fly?

HD has sheets of the stuff around $60 for a 4x8. I picked one that I could live with. Here’s an example:

If you need a really sturdy (but relatively heavy) table top I recommend going to H.D. or similar and buying a 4x8 sheet of flooring plywood. They have them that are 1 1/8" thick. That's what I made my work bench top out of and covered it with outdoor carpet. Frankly it's probably overkill but solid as a rock.

OK thanks.

Guess I was confused when you wrote:

But now you are saying formica IS what you'd use.

Look at the price of a ready made Formica countertop from the same source. This plus MDF is about 1/3 the cost for a ROYO solution that’s cheaper to replace if you mess it up. That was what I meant.
