Snakes? Nope. Possum? Nope

Wild turkey. Don't see wild turkey much in a residential area. This was from last fall when a rafter (flock) of wild turkey visited the neighborhood every afternoon for about a month. There were about a dozen (all hens). They would cruise about a quarter mile deep into the addition and then work their way back to the roost. They weren't too concerned about traffic or people walking their dogs.

One afternoon my neighbor was outside watching them and I asked if he was baiting the turkey in. "Turkey?" he replies "I thought they were some kind of vulture.". City folk

In this photo they are leaving the porch of the house next door to me.

There is a house about 1/2 mile south of me still zoned as a farm. They have one donkey, two Shetland ponies, an about a 1/2 dozen semi-domesticated geese and ducks and several wild turkeys that hang out at their front yard which is about 8 acres. Evidently the donkey is the protector of the group. The have some free range chickens and most of the birds seem to roost in the trees at night. I have to assume they are all well fed by the home owners. The property across the street from them is 80 acres. They have have an 8 to 10 acre lake.

At my property in central Texas, there are turkeys. I don't feed them and there are not any other folks living anywhere near by. I find their nest in the field while mowing sometimes and just leave an island of high grass around them until they are all hatched out and gone. They don't seem to be afraid of me so I guess there is no hunting pressure in the surrounding county. I was working on the fence and this one just casually strolled by. I was talking to it like it should somehow understand me but it just ignored me.

This picture is from a few years ago. We used to have flocks numbering maybe two dozen. In the last few years it seems the number has gone down a lot. That goes for all the wildlife around here to include rabbits, quail, dove, turkeys, bob cats, etc. A decent amount of deer seem to still be around.

I pretty much live in the middle of town but have Ft Sill's East Range to my north and Indian land for a couple of miles on the other three sides.

Two years ago we had 2 bull elk in the field just to my north. They would lay out in the middle of the field every afternoon. To get to the field they moved out of their Wichita Mountain refuge. Cross I44 and then traveled another 10 miles or so across Sill's firing range.

They were quite a sight.

The refuge has an elk population of about 800. They do so well there is an annual hunt with tags by draw . Thousands apply for about 200 tags. The 2018 hunt resulted in a 137 kills. Not many folks know we have a wild herd that large in SW Oklahoma

In had a “pet” turkey once. Mostly wild but very domesticated. We called her Suzzie. Once the local flock came around in the spring she took off with them.

This was on our front porch. Nearly a daily occurrence all winter.

wild turkey is a whole different animal than the farm raised birds. They are very tough--mostly muscle and sinew--and not tasty at all.

Yes, but make sure it's a turkey. Back in the 18th century new arrivals to the colonies were told how tasty the turkey is and described what it looked like. They killed and tried to eat turkey buzzards instead, because they look so similar. I cannot imagine what a turkey buzzard must taste like.

Several years ago, my mom, who was 75 at the time and lived in a subdivision, had a turkey fly through her living room picture window. She was somehow able to A) not have a heart attack and B) close the 2 doors to the living room, trapping it. The damn thing destroyed her living room, carpet, and furniture. Blood all over the place. When the cop got there, he went in, grabbed it and snapped it's neck. Drama over.

Of course, the insurance company denied her claim saying they don't cover bird damage.

Was just sitting at my computer and this turkey landed outside my window.

Well, it's a turkey vulture anyway.

We get turkey and vultures all the time here, but this is our first time in 30 years here to see a bald eagle! was in a tree behind the house for about 10 min. until three crows showed up and harassed him enough to leave.
