Shiit, if it weren't for the fact that I couldn't grow a pornstar moustache, the dildo ski-patrol guy could have been me, right down to the Columbia Parka and the cateye Vuarnets. And I probably sounded just like him. Thank god for selective memory.

Thanks? for posting this. I just had a massive body shudder from a 40-year-old case of pent-up willies.

Plankers! slope trash! No skier etiquette, they all belong to gangs and they all carry guns. And their once illegal boards are the perfect design to scrape the good snow off the hill. 😃
I've been a skier since the early 60s can you tell?

The early wooden Burton boards those guys in the video are on are worth a small fortune now to collectors.
I remember when avalanche (Alpine) Meadows was the last resort to allow snow boarding. Now they host world championships. Snow boarding saved a lot of ski resorts during drought years. Boarders thankfully developed some etiquette by the nineties but early on it was war. This thread reminds me of some early confrontations. Like in the early nineties skiing with my wife. I can ski, my wife not so much. I was skiing behind her giving pointers when a boarder came flying between us knocking her down. I yelled at the guy who just looked at me and took off. I made sure she was OK and it was on. The guy was fast but no board on earth can out run my 210 GS skis. He tried though and when he knew he couldn't get away he stopped. I didn't. Full, square body shot, knockng the crap out of him and somehow keeping my feet. I asked him how he liked it and next time he knocked someone down he should stop and see if they're OK. Do you need a sled? "no I'm OK" and he apologized. Ha ha, man that felt good

All of my peers' (I'm 47) kids ski because, duh, "mom and dad board so that's kind of lame".

Been on snow for over 40y and done one day on a board. Our 8yo has already learned to respond to "Do you snowboard?" with "Why? I can ski!".

Good girl...

(and yes, I see the attraction - it is easier to pick up _especially_ if you're already used to moving on the snow down a hill - not that you don't hit the ground over and over and over and over that first day - I'll stick to my two sticks, thanks)

Boarding looks to be a much less expensive sport...
Downhill equipment can add up quick...in clothing alone.
I've never tried snowboarding....but it looks like fun.

Ahem. Cannonsburg MI,1986. Lions jacket probably from Meijer (Thrifty Acres for life!), blue jeans, garbage bag for when it might rain on that grim manmade snow. $6 student ticket from some deal for 6th graders with the Press. It can be done cheap, it builds character but it sure ain't classy! It wasn't until I got pro-room deals with my college ski team that I had my first new gear - the local ski-swap was (and frankly still is) planned for months in advance.

I remember Taos and Alta before they allowed boards, and all of the drama with the old people when they "embraced diversity". So silly. As said above in the thread, every butt on a chairlift helps, and where I ski I rarely encounter boarders though if I do they're mountain-aware and not idiots.

(some of the long flats in the unmaintained parts of Wolf Creek CO are "once in a lifetime" experiences for boarders, as in they'll never do that again - I've actually helped drag some of the friendly ones out when it's soft or at least loaned a ski pole)

1985. yep, that would have been the time I was ripping down the side of a mountain on one. Not that I was any good - but had a good time which is more important.

Yah… boarders.

My best friend rides a board and we rode the pow yesterday.

I ski 2-3 times a week all winter long.

Many boarders are a-hats. Many have no idea how to ride so they just scrape the powder off the mountain and make ice.

We had an incident 2 weeks ago where a boarder ventured onto our super g course right in front of my daughter’s coach who was doing a lead follow getting ready for last weekends race. The coach took a spill instead of hitting the boarder and hurt his knee pretty good. If it was 30 seconds later it would have been my little girl and instead of merely getting yelled at in the lift line by 2 ski race dads (me and one other guy), that boarder might well have been riding away in an ambulance and me in big trouble. Our race course was really well marked. The guy was just being an arse hole.

There are also some really great people on boards, my friend included. When I blew out my ACL and MCL the first guys who stopped to help were boarders. We are all out there just trying to enjoy the snow.

Skiing is the sport of kings.... I have always viewed snowboarding as a sport for punk skateboarder types. When my kids were growing up I taught them to ski only and that snowboarding was grounds for disownment.

Nothing pisses me off more on the slopes than seeing some punk kids sliding down the face of a steep black run on their asses with their board scraping off snow down to the ice like a snowplow. Or when they decide to attempt the moguls and totally trash a good line. Or if they slide over and scratch my skis.

I view 4 wheelers vs MX bikes the same way. The four wheelers trash all the lines on an mx track.

Now get off my lawn.

I was on a snowboard from 1989 until about 2018, then went back to skiing. I do miss it on powder days, not so much on a packed or icy-er day. After a back injury and a couple of back surgeries I just couldn't do the up and down strapping into the board anymore.

I actually owned a Burton Performer...you know that piece of plywood hung as a decoration in most ski shops? Those were the days LOL.

Just got back from 3 days at Vail. Good times.

I'd send the borg back in time and take out the snowboarders before they could multiply.

I remember those days. Snowboarders calling skiers, "pole ferries."

Good times.

Nice vid cp. Takes me back...

Burton Backhill boards and all... squirrely as sht.

I was building composite snowboards in the late 70's (14-15 y/o) with Boeing surplus honeycomb.
My builds were also squirrely as sht. Even in powder. But at least they were lighter for the trek up hill, since there was NO way they would let me up the lift with it.
I concluded skis are MUCH better.
